in my article on ‘Positional Empathy’, i used Martin Ødegaard as an example, as he’s got a lot of positional empathy. this sequence from against Brighton is another example of both ‘will’ and ‘intelligence’ to help out his teammates by offering himself as a pass option. 1/6.

the concept of ‘technical empathy’ is, essentially, the passer passing the ball to the receiver in a manner that eases the reception of the ball. in the same vein, ‘positional empathy’ is simply positioning and orientating oneself in an accessible space, easing the pass. 2/6.

in a 43-second sequence of play, Ødegaard displayed positional empathy first by moving to the center and creating a lane for ¹Hincapié. He then moved all the way across to the left, created lanes for ²MLS, then ³Raya, and followed the play to the right to offer to ⁴Rice. 3/6.

then adjusted his position twice to remain accessible for ⁴Saka. after passing forward, moved for a possible return from ⁵Zubi. when Ø did not receive the pass, he followed again all the way to ⁶Trossard on the left, and finished the sequence he essentially started. 4/6.

just another excellent display of positional empathy on a large scale and connection of play from left to right to left again and from back to front. not to mention the amount of mental and physical stamina it takes to do that multiple times in a game, every game. 5/6.

just my opinion, but i think that Martin Ødegaard is quite good at football, that Arsenal’s gameplay flows better w/ his involvement, and that while he might have his flaws [like all players], he is still a huge net positive for Arsenal, especially in certain game dynamics. ❤️.
