My latest #neuro #visualization: An intuition pump on connectivity in the #brain ~75K #neurons in the #MICrONS mm³. I/O segregated by layers, function is columnar; the cortical column is the unit of cortical computation. A typical #pyramidal cell has over >10K input #synapses.

In less than one minute, our custom-made femtosecond laser mill cuts this geometry in the tips of our needles. The tip is only 10 to 12 microns in width—only slightly larger than the diameter of a red blood cell. The small size allows threads to be inserted with minimal damage to the cortex. 🪡

American scientists have created the most detailed map of neural connections in a mammalian brain. They studied the visual cortex of a genetically modified mouse whose neurons lit up when active. The mouse was shown various videos, including clips from the movie The Matrix. Afterwards, its brain was sliced into over 25,000 ultra-thin layers, and about 100 million images were taken. Using artificial intelligence, the researchers built a 3D map showing more than 200,000 brain cells — including around 82,000 neurons and over 500 million connections between them (synapses). The scientists hope this work will help better understand how the brain functions in conditions like Alzheimer’s, autism, and other neuropsychiatric disorders.
