The Xiaohongshu #TikTokRefugee phenomenon is truly fascinating and really exciting if it perdures. It would be the first time ever that we would have a social media app where Western and Chinese users interact at scale. Pretty ironic when this is spurred by an attempt by the U.S. government to get rid of TikTok because it is "Chinese" when it has no Chinese users nor Chinese content. I've been testing the app 👇 and the phenomenon is real: a huge proportion of the posts in the main timeline are by "Tiktok refugees", with many posts being "refugees" asking questions to the Chinese user base. The app is still missing some obvious features that would make it more usable to an international user base. You can have the app in English but it doesn't look like you can translate posts or videos yet. Which means that if you don't speak or read Chinese, you can only understand the posts that are in English (and vice-versa: no translation for English content into Chinese either). My bet is that the Xiaohongshu tech team in Shanghai (where Xiaohongshu is based) must already be working hard on this. All in all this illustrates several important and actually quite hopeful lessons. Firstly, this shapes up to be yet another U.S. attempt to contain China backfiring: instead of reducing Chinese tech influence, it's potentially creating an even more direct bridge between Chinese and Western users on a platform that's actually based in China, unlike TikTok which operates separately from its Chinese version Douyin. Secondly, there's obviously significant untapped demand for genuine cross-cultural social media platforms, despite (or perhaps because of) the geopolitical tensions. Many people obviously do not want the digital iron curtain that the U.S. is trying to erect here: this is all happening organically without any promotional push from Xiaohongshu, people genuinely do not want an artificially divided world. Lastly, less obvious but no less important, the business dimension is particularly interesting. Xiaohongshu isn't just another social media app - it's fundamentally an e-commerce platform where social features emerged organically around shopping. If this trend continues, this has the potential to reshape cross-border commerce between China and the U.S. in really profound ways. Many "TikTok refugees" are actually small business owners who built their success on TikTok: imagine the potential of a platform that gives them direct access to Chinese consumers! This, alongside Chinese sellers finding new ways to reach American audiences, could create entirely new patterns of trade, bypassing traditional intermediaries. This would be the icing on the cake with the other ironies: when governments are trying to 'de-risk' and decouple supply chains, Xiaohongshu could help the ground-level reality of ordinary entrepreneurs and consumers move in the exact opposite direction. Anyhow, whether this phenomenon lasts or not, it reveals something that should give us all some measure of hope: while politicians and policymakers focus on trying to divide the world and fearmonger, ordinary people seem more interested in finding ways to connect. They're more interested in bridges than walls, and that's a good thing!

The regime then slapped him with trumped-up charges of “espionage” and “terrorism,” sentencing him to life in prison, where he remains after more than 20 years. Think about this: A man who could have shone in the world’s top academic circles, who could have lived a safe, respected life, was instead buried behind prison walls—simply because he refused to abandon his faith in freedom. This is not just his personal tragedy. This is the shame of an entire nation. And when we look at world history, we see a pattern: dictators always meet the same fate. Ceausescu, toppled by the people of Romania. Saddam, executed in Iraq. Gaddafi, dragged down from his throne in Libya’s deserts. Even today, Assad and Hasina—those so-called “old friends” of the CCP—are watching their power rot and their regimes crumble. They once seemed invincible. But in the end, all were swept into the garbage heap of history. Because in the modern world, dictatorship has no future. The CCP today may look strong—propped up by money, lies, and fear. Speaks with total confidence, often rude and arrogant. Says he doesn't need to go to America to be an America expert. Would you take him seriously? The reverse is the reality here in The West: • Western China “experts” who only speak English • Blinded by hubris and hidden beliefs of cultural/moral superiority • Rely almost entirely on translations and secondary reports • Cannot check primary Chinese sources themselves • Cannot fathom The Chinese have some insights to offer In a world full of information and competing narratives, these experts are frauds. These people are modelling behavior for the masses. When it comes to this topic, you can be rude and flippant. When it comes to that topic, you better be demure and polite. Victor Davis Hanson just demonstrated the problem clearly on Piers Morgan. A Chinese scholar asked a straightforward question: “Have you been to China?” Hanson replied: “Have you been to the moon?” The message was: the question is stupid. I don’t need to go. I don’t need the language. Reports and translators are sufficient. That attitude is not rigorous. It models the opposite of careful thinking — flippancy, cultural superiority, and trust in filtered information. I am not claiming China is perfect or that one side should win while everyone else loses. I criticize freely. I also appreciate much of American and Canadian culture. Brad McQuaid, Terry Fox, Neil Young are some names that came to mind as I rambled last night. I tend to sympathize more with blue-collar workers. The physical wear on the body is usually the heavier long-term cost. Why isn't Canada cracking down on illegal truckers? You may have come across some of our trucking stories lately. No, we’re not talking about the patriots who were part of the Freedom Convoy in 2022. Those truckers were and are heroes. Rather, we speak of certain newcomers to our once great Dominion. You know, people who lack basic driving and language skills, yet are still somehow on the road driving 18-wheelers! And consider the number of trucks that are poorly maintained, resulting in a clear and present danger. And then there are those massive trucking storage yards in such Ontario cities such as Vaughan, Caledon, and Brampton. These yards are illegally situated on residential or agricultural land. Yet, instead of being shut down, these eyesores are tolerated by every level of government – municipal, provincial and federal. How weird is that? And as they used to say on those cheesy Ronco TV commercials, “But wait – there’s more!” Such as: many of these illicit trucking companies are fostering a growing underground economy that is breeding lawlessness on the roads. This includes everything from drug running to human trafficking. Naturally, there’s prolific immigration fraud involving temporary foreign workers employed in this industry. And then there are the rules that are being violated at every level – from the rules of the road to the rules regarding environmental stewardship (i.e., the illegal dumping of used motor oil and transmission fluid into waterways). But most shocking of all, nothing is being done to put an end to these dangerous shenanigans. Did we say “dangerous”? Correction: we meant to say “deadly”. Case in point: Adrianna Milena McCauley. This 23-year-old woman died in a four-vehicle collision on Sept. 10, 2024, on Coleraine Drive and King Street West in Caledon. Rajwinder Singh, a Punjabi asylum seeker, was behind the wheel of a transport truck that soared through a red light that had been illuminated for a full 10 seconds. Earlier this year, Singh was shockingly handed a mere 55-day jail sentence and a $1,000 fine. Was he deported? What do you think? But while those in charge in Canada are doing nothing to address this problem, such is not the case south of the border. Make no mistake: the U.S. is also experiencing issues with foreign ill-trained truckers who can’t speak English or read road signs or competently drive big rigs. The difference is that Washington is acting on this scandal while Ottawa looks the other way. Check out this media release that was issued on August 4th from the Department of Homeland Security entitled, “DHS and Department of Transportation Announce Successful Operation that Removed More than 800 Dangerous Truckers from America’s Roads.” Oh, and in case you’re wondering, dozens of the arrested truckers who were busted in Operation Highway Shield are indeed illegal aliens. Thank you, Joe Biden… Here’s the skinny: “In a three-day operation from July 28 to July 30, inspectors from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations along with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and state highway patrols, conducted roadside checks to crack down on illegal, unvetted drivers and unsafe vehicles. “Over the course of those three days, law enforcement officers: • Detained 51 illegal immigrants, including 21 drivers with non-domiciled commercial driver licenses issued by California and New York. • Placed 766 unsafe drivers and vehicles out of service. • Arrested 86 operators for dangerous behavior (including road rage and domestic violence). • Issued 36 violations for failing English Language Proficiency tests. • Recovered nearly $1 million in stolen cargo." Nice… But again, while the Trump administration is getting serious when it comes to cracking down on this problem, the Carney Liberals and, in Ontario, the Doug Ford Progressive Conservatives have no intention of launching a Canadian version of Operation Highway Shield. Now, why would that be? Did we learn absolutely nothing from the Humboldt Broncos tragedy? Our take: maybe enforcing the rules of the road would be… oh, you know, culturally insensitive. Maybe Premier Ford and Prime Minister Carney realize that the sort of people getting into this industry – i.e., predominantly Indians – represent a powerful and growing voting bloc. And offending this voting bloc would surely be very unwise for a politician hoping to get elected or re-elected. Convince us we’re wrong on this. We know we have a deadly problem on our hands with certain migrant truckers. We know who they are and where to find them. But nothing is being done. In the meantime, the roads are fraught with danger. Sometimes innocent people are needlessly killed. This is what happens when irresponsible politicians embrace a policy of “safety last”.
