Automatic Helicopter Landings on Naval Ships Landing a helicopter on a moving naval ship is one of the most demanding tasks in aviation. The flight deck continuously changes its position, attitude, and velocity with the sea, requiring precise relative positioning throughout the approach. The landing sequence uses two navigation systems. During the approach, Differential GPS (DGPS) guides the helicopter along a calculated flight path. Near the flight deck, navigation switches to a laser guidance system, providing centimeter-level relative positioning for the final hover and touchdown. It was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
