Big Tech is suing a tiny Ohio town of Urbana after its city council listened to the residents and voted no on a massive AI data center Urbana only has a population of about 11,000 but they’re going up against a $20 billion company The company wants to put in a data center so massive it will use 8 times the entire town’s current annual electricity usage The data center project would claim 565 acres The$1 billion AI data center would likely use an enormous amount of water, up to hundreds of millions of gallons per year For a project of this scale, the Thor Equities’ proposal annual usage could easily reach 300–1,800+ million gallons per year in water usage “The city council also put a 12-month moratorium in place on all data centers, and on June 16th, they finalized the zoning regulations that said no data centers, leading Thor Equities to file a federal lawsuit against this tiny town. The facility had used nearly 30 million gallons of water without paying, owing about $147,000 in retroactive charges. The county billed them but didn’t fine them, calling QTS their biggest customer and a partner. The story only came out after a resident got the letter through a public records request.

Attorney representing the proposed Data Center DC Blox says the data center is being built despite the public saying no The Nashville Zoo launched a petition that has gathered over 500k signatures against the data center, there was fierce resident outcry, even celebrities came out opposing the data center But the data center says they don’t care about any of that, they say the areas has been zoned and they are moving forward The zoo filed a zoning appeal to challenge the permits Amazing how you can have half a million residents outraged and saying no and then they publicly tell you it’s happening anyway
