Indianapolis residents have shut down a proposed Google data center. The tech giant wanted to build a massive 500 acre facility, but people got organized and stopped them. The $1 billion data center would've used one million gallons of water a day.

That datacenter and its corollary businesses could have provided tens of thousands of organically grown, high tech, great paying, future proof jobs, and led to the education of an equal number of young Hoosiers to fill them. Those young Hoosiers would have been able to learn the world class expertise from the coasts, and could have started their own companies in the Midwest, filled with Midwestern values and missions. Now, because of misperceived evils from Communist propaganda, Hoosiers will miss out on all the above.

The water usage claims of datacenters is blatantly false/misleading. There are plenty of things to criticize data centers for (brownouts, strain on local power grids, etc) but water usage is the worst thing to attack them on.

Residents remain cautiously optimistic, knowing the fight is far from over. Google can re-file their petition in 3 months — the same playbook a secretive tech company in St Charles, Missouri used when they pulled their data center application after widespread public outrage — in hopes of returning when community opposition wanes.
