#UEFN Material tips 🗣️🔥 Use Bump Offset to create fake depth for textures. In this example, I used it to add a darker secondary fence texture that feels behind the main one, like in the 3D world, while remaining a 2D texture applied to the mesh.

I created my own custom water material and underwater post process material in UEFN! It uses distance fields to create foam and ripples around objects on the surface and I can also add algae/pondscum to the surface. I plan on adding more features to this material soon! For underwater, I project a caustics material along surface normals in the underwater post process material as well as using scene depth to make things up close appear clear and things farther away appear not as clear. #UEFN #Fortnite

Want to use Depth Anything, but need metric depth rather than relative depth? Thrilled to introduce Prompt Depth Anything, a new paradigm for accurate metric depth estimation with up to 4K resolution. 👉Key Message: Depth foundation models like DA have already internalized rich geometric knowledge of the 3D world but lack a proper way to elicit it. Inspired by the success of prompting in LLMs, we propose prompting Depth Anything with metric cues to produce metric depth. This method proves to be very effective when using a low-cost lidar (e.g., iPhone's LiDAR), which is widely available, as prompts. We believe the prompt can generalize to other forms as long as scale information is provided. Prompt Depth Anything offers 1⃣A series of models for iPhone lidars. 2⃣4D reconstruction from monocular videos (captured with iPhone). 3⃣Improved generalization ability for robot manipulation, e.g. Training on cans but generalizing on glasses. 4⃣More detailed depth annotations for the ScanNet++ dataset. The robot’s “eyes” just received a big upgrade. LingBot-Depth 2.0, a depth-completion model with half the depth error just dropped. 12/16 benchmarks topped. Glass, mirrors, and transparent objects are so easy for us humans, but so hard for robots, because they do not behave like ordinary surfaces in a camera pipeline. A robot that misunderstands a balcony window or a table edge, will have a completely false planning inside a false world. Huge implecation. LingBot-Depth 2.0 takes an RGB image plus a broken depth map from a sensor and then outputs a cleaner depth map and a usable 3D point cloud. Numbers on LingBot-Depth 2.0 - Excels on glass, mirrors & transparent objects — where traditional depth cameras fail - Training data: 3M → 150M (50x scale-up) - 12 out of 16 first-place rankings on depth completion benchmarks - RMSE cut in half: 0.132 → 0.062 on the hardest indoor scenes LingBot-Vision trained on boundaries, because object edges carry the geometry robots need. No human boundary labels are used, which makes this approach easier to scale. The open-sourced LingBot-Vision is the general vision backbone, and LingBot-Depth 2.0 is the depth model built on it.

These are real life concerts recreated in UEFN. This is all in Fortnite. The creator is XO Productions which is one of the largest entertainment groups on Roblox and Fortnite. Drop a video, Depth Anything v2 calculates the depth map frame by frame, and Three.js renders a fully lit 3D mesh in real time. What if drop shadows actually look like real shadows? We are using Omma to explore a new kind of canvas that employs real-light approximations rather than simple 2D drop shadows. It runs on WebGPU and uses real-time path tracing to simulate more realistic shading. It also supports SVG shapes. The Z-index defines actual depth, too (objects with a lower z-index would be affected by shadows of other objects).

I spent a lot of time with the ARKitScenes dataset; it's a great proxy for a bunch of downstream tasks and holds some ~5k casually collected iPhone reconstructions. I make the argument in the attached article that using this with Prompt Depth Anything, MogeV2, and Gaussian Splats leads to much better reconstructions for other downstream tasks and labels. Here's one of the post-processed reconstructions I generated that contains the depth and normal maps for the ultrawide camera

For the facial animations in my game, I use a technique that yields results similar to L.A. Noire. To keep it simple: I first generate a facial animation video using AI like LTX 2. Then, I create a video depth map from that animation and project it onto a face mask. Using vertex displacement, the depth map dynamically deforms the face as the character speaks. The result looks good in standalone VR. I actually created this workflow long time ago:

You don't need an overly complex scene to create nice renders of your asset. Sometimes, all it takes it just a simple curved plane, a long focal length (80-120mm) and a shallow depth of field (1.8/2/4).
