My daughter is like that, I’ve noticed it a lot with Gen Z. They’ve grown up in turmoil and they had to learn to control their emotions early on. I also think that most of their interactions are through social media and they don’t know how to play with a live audience.

Covid masks and virtual interactions definitely possible culprits

I think the issue has to do more with the dopamine receptors. It is an established fact that Gen Z is suffering from the detrimental social network effect on their dopamine receptors - dopamine being the joy hormone. In other words, constant quick gratification has caused many of the youngsters to feel neurologically unsatisfied even with the most common joys of life. If one's dopamine levels are unstable and/insufficient, then obviously no express (ie. facial) signs of joy will show.

When I moved from country life to big city life, one of the first things I had to work on was relaxing my face until it was flat. Being a smiling country girl would make me a victim. Just looking at me, outted me. This could be something like that. A defense mechanism.

Masking had an absolutely devastating effect on development for these kids .. we will feel the damage for decades to come .. Dems who pushed it are fucking retarded. They all should be charged with crimes against humanity

Omg, I've noticed this! Delegating tasks to interns that are fresh out of college and experiencing the work force for the first time, their facial expressions are completely blank. I can't tell if they hate the work or what. It's weird as hell.

sorry but if this guy was in my face I’d deescalate too its not only a specific age group, presence is more and more optional like life is a feed you scan until something grabs the attention.

I know for youth - masks per Covid 😷 keep in mind kids mimic their parents & most families are struggling in many ways but primarily financially & we all are the most unhappiest, day to day, than ever before We are not allowed to live the life we’ve been promised, even doing it all right by the book

Probably has a lot to do with the masking requirement during COVID. With faces covered, facial expressions became meaningless and void. The damage from masking is very real and lasting.

They have a fear of being perceived because now every moment is or can be recorded and broadcast to the world. They’ve learned to “give nothing” in order to prevent themselves from ever being a target of ridicule or judgment. Doing too much even facially is a death knell to them.

Pandemic facemasks played a major part in this

Also, the age of the people using Botox keeps getting lower and lower. It’s becoming common for in the early 20s to use Botox, which paralyzes portions of the face.

Ya, I've been thinking about this for yrs now. Looking at the younger gens growing up perpetually online will have some kind of effect on their brain development. Seeing now how little kids with smart devices go full rage when it's taken away. Or how they grow up constantly getting dopamine hits, likes, etc online which allows their ego to be up front and center more than their conscious selves. I think we see this being born out in things like "the Gen Z stare" or the rising fascination with serial killers, body mods and/or the modern trans movement. It'll get worse before it gets better. Guaranteed

My resting face is my fucking resting face. I finally stopped forcing myself to look cheerful for other people’s comfort recently as I have been trying to manage my energy levels to be able to enjoy myself after my responsibilities and not just crashing.

I didn’t understand the point about cameras being “pointed up” when they’re doing their FaceTimes…what did that mean?

These were 7th, 8th,9th,10th,11th and 12th graders in 2020. Definitely covid /masks, zoom classes with no camera and when they did go back to school... masks, desk shields, separation by 6'.

Good observation. Their primary way to communicate with friends is texting and, if you notice, when texting how neutral facial expressions are. Also, people are more likely now to interact with people with flat affect due to the rise in autism.

My Z’s are not emotionless… Their father, brother, and I at times try to bring them up to speed on current events. Important things that impact their future and decision making. They obviously and literally shut down and all but run out of the room. I don’t interpret this as controlling emotions I interrupt it as refusing to engage in reality. ANYTHING truthful is considered to be negative and they are trying to be positive so you are the bad one. Subjects are interrupted as negative if they make you feel bad. So if you are the bearer of bad news then you made them feel bad not the news. It’s the “therapist” taught protect yourselves with boundaries from people and subjects that dont make you feel good. “Someone triggers you? They are to toxic for you.” They are not capable of having peaceful discourse with diverse opinions on any subject. Get triggered and offended and retreat to their safe space. Z if a huge difference compared to X. All of my X friends over the years were always very close to their mothers. Mine have friends they’ve met online they can call on in the middle of the night with their problems…who needs parental advice or guidance from the people in the other room when you have friends who are also refusing parental advice and guidance to guide them. I guess Z will do just fine on their own.

Kids raised by emotionless parents on SSRIs! Or parents always staring at their phone. Even if I were raised only around my family, I’d learn my first social expressions from my parents. Families (even animals) have micromannerisms specific to their group…learned from birth.

I’m having a problem with people using their hands to talk too much and over expressing when speaking about nothing so that just looking at them is exhausting because of how fake they are acting to manipulate other people into thinking there’s some kind of decent social human

Yep. Told a friends 19yr old son yesterday that his dad an I are having a 2 way conversation taking it in turns to use out fave and body to answer and fees reactive info to the other who's talking, but his son just stares blankly, then gets annoyed why we keep talking and don't stop. It almost feels like the blank face is telling me to keep trying until he gives off a recognisable signal he understands or agrees. And yeah, I think its because so much of his interacrions were on a PC or phone, so he never learned to gesticulating and express withbhiabfave.
