Weak productivity growth, underinvestment, housing constraints, an ageing population and, crucially, Brexit have all played significant roles over many years. Brexit introduced new trade barriers with... Britain’s largest market, reduced labour mobility and created additional costs for many businesses, all of which have weighed on growth. The contrast with the United States is also more complex than you suggested. America’s dominance in AI and technology is the product of decades of investment, deep capital markets, world class universities and a culture of entrepreneurship that predates Donald Trump. It is difficult to compare Britain’s performance with America’s without acknowledging that Britain chose to leave a major economic bloc while the United States continued to benefit from a vast integrated domestic market. Barack Obama was shocked that Britain made the foolish decision of leaving the EU, and it has contributed to its decline as promised by the then governor of the Bank of England, Markey Carney who is now the Canadian Prime Minister. Concerns about growth, regulation and risk taking that you raised are valid, but cultural debates around universities, gender issues and “wokeness” do not by themselves explain economic performance. Economic growth is driven far more by investment, trade, innovation, skills and productivity than by culture war issues. Your argument that wealthy families are abandoning British universities and that large numbers of Britons are leaving for economic reasons would require substantial evidence. British universities remain among the most sought after in the world, and the UK continues to attract significant numbers of international students despite Brexit. Britain needs faster growth, higher productivity and greater investment. These challenges can’t be explained primarily through net zero policies and cultural change while overlooking the economic consequences of Brexit, which remains one of the most significant structural changes to the British economy in recent decades. Below is former British Prime Minister David Cameron warning British citizens about the dangers of leaving the EU before they made that decision. Many of the warnings he gave before the referendum have since come to pass. That, in my view, does far more to explain Britain’s current economic difficulties than arguments about cultural wokeness. Brexit fundamentally altered Britain’s trading relationship with its largest market, introduced new barriers to trade and labour mobility, and created economic headwinds that continue to be felt today. Any serious discussion about Britain’s economic challenges must grapple with that reality. That said, I enjoyed reading your piece, and thank you for initiating these debates. Why oh why doesn’t our establishment accept that its only moral obligation is to the British state and the British people? Not to global welfare. Not to international liberalism. To us, and our country, and our self-government. That is it. The moment they do that, so many of the issues which plague our society become easier to manage. Immigration is no longer a question of benefitting the largest number of global citizens but about boosting the British economy while keeping British people safe. Foreign relations is not about promoting obscure minority rights in far off lands but about securing British interests wherever necessary. And most of all we drop the idea that every culture in the world is the same and therefore anybody can fit in here, and celebrate the fact that Britain has a highly distinct, highly evolved culture all of its own that we want to cherish and protect. What’s so difficult about that?

Why oh why doesn’t our establishment accept that its only moral obligation is to the British state and the British people? Not to global welfare. Not to international liberalism. To us, and our country, and our self-government. That is it. The moment they do that, so many of the issues which plague our society become easier to manage. Immigration is no longer a question of benefitting the largest number of global citizens but about boosting the British economy while keeping British people safe. Foreign relations is not about promoting obscure minority rights in far off lands but about securing British interests wherever necessary. AOC: Trump has been saying the economy is booming, but it’s really only seven tech companies. They’re driving this growth in just one sector: AI. So the entire economic growth can be tracked down to seven companies and their AI expansion. Forty percent of economic growth is attributed to these companies alone, and 80% of stock gains this year came from AI companies. People are justifying these levels of investment because of the promises CEOs make — that there will be a return on that investment. For a company like OpenAI, their valuation is based on the expectation that they’re going to figure out how to make a profit off this, and they haven’t. Generating this increased human dependency that can be mined — people’s deepest fears, emotional content — can all be mined for this empty promise that we’re getting from these companies in the pursuit of profit. The reason I bring all of this up is that the exposure to this industry and this investment, I fear, has reached broad levels of the American economy. We’re talking about 40% of growth being attributed to that sector alone, and it has not turned a profit. We’re talking about a massive economic bubble. Depending on the exposure of that bubble, we could be facing 2008-style threats to economic stability.

“Fairness” = give the bureaucracy more money? Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is raising the tax on capital investments to the highest level in the G7. This video reveals a sad, dystopian view of Canadians. She uses the resentful ‘class war’ language of the 1970s, where Canada will be filled with a sad majority feeling ‘wrath’ unless you accept her new tax. Who writes these speeches? Have they travelled? Famously egalitarian nations Belgium and Switzerland and Singapore have zero cap gains taxes. Do they hate fairness? Seriously, this is her proposal: Take $18 billion in risk capital proceeds away from Canada’s small but critical investor class with a globally uncompetitive tax rate. Then give that money - along with another $40 billion in debt - to a federal bureaucracy that currently does not show up for work in person more than twice a week. They will invest it instead. The nation will heal. Thats not fairness. It’s losing. Again. On an international scale. Here’s why this tax will add to her economic losing streak: 1. It kills economic growth. Taxing capital investment discourages the cash that backs the entrepreneurial ideas that turn into the jobs and companies that grow the economy and improve productivity and living standards. Every other large advanced economy will have a lower cap gains tax than Canada. Are they less ‘fair’ than Minister Freeland? Or do they have an economic strategy of shared prosperity that allows for individual success without the sad language of class resentment and envy? Every company whose services we love today - no matter how large - started with an entrepreneur - and some investors crazy enough to fund them with risk capital. But federal fiscal incoherence is costing Canadians $54 billion interest losses degrading public services and the worst declining GDP performance in the G7 2019-2024 and the worst GDP per capita of all 40 advanced nations in the OECD modelled out to 2030. Fairness for Canadians starts with federal fiscal competence. 2. It kills jobs (the real ones): The private sector creates jobs when good ideas or expansion is funded by risk capital - that is why positive jobs reports are usually signals of economic growth. But Canada’s jobs reports aren’t signals of economic growth anymore because they feature a failing economy where most of the jobs being reported are actually government roles bought with debt. This kills economic productivity. When governments use debt to buy jobs it turns a single debt-funded position into a permanent unfunded annual govt operating cost. Every one of these jobs costs more in tax, debt and interest than it can ever contribute back. Taxing the risk capital that creates real jobs while borrowing money to buy public sector jobs with debt - the current modus operandi of this government and its “jobs” announcements - kills GDP productivity. 3.
