Born 1969. Everything he said is true. I think children of the 50/60s are the same. However, my 70s kids had momโ€™s that worked, so we did have total autonomy (but watchout if you broke the rules).

I'm a year younger than you. I too agree with what was said. I think it's sad that the freedom we took for granted is rarely experienced by younger generations especially in developed countries.

Agree. My kid is 19 and I wish she had my childhood. I honestly tried but by puberty everything changed.

I can't believe how perfectly this describes my childhood! We lived on a new cul-de-sac, 3rd house built - surrounded by woods and creeks and wild life, in Rochester, NY. We watched our entire neighborhood be built. We'd leave asa the sun came up until the street lights came on! Except to sneak in to pee, Lol. There were so many kids and everyone got along with everyone. Picking berries, flying kites, hide & go seek on bicycles, riding big wheels down the hill 100mph trying to go fast enough to make it across the creek, lol. It was glorious! ๐Ÿฅนโค๏ธ

I brought my children up on how I was brought up. Playing, being creative, books, music, enjoying the outside etc I have two well adjusted very clever teenagers, even taught themselves to hang a door, fix a new light fitting, mend an electric appliance etc

Brilliant analysis! I can relate to everything said! ๐Ÿ‘ BUT here's a thought: The ONLY people who will truly understand this analysis will be those who actually lived through this period. The core point of the analysis being that one has to live it, experience it, get the knocks and bruises in order to learn and develop. Without that core experience there is never true understanding an understanding that the youth of today, sadly, will never have! ๐Ÿ˜ข

The conundrum is that this freedom created the drive to strike out tackle more only to end up yearning to go back. That cycle is the only constant no matter what decade you grew up in. We crave nostalgia because we are not yet one with our Creator.

I grew up in the 50s and 60s and I would say we experienced all of these things in spades. Both my parents worked, my sister and i had chores and responsibilities and were trusted to do them without supervision. My buds and I made dugout shelters in the levee of the Mississippi river, made bows out of string and branches with horseweed arrows, trash can lids for shields, made fires and cooked fish from the river, swung on grapevines, skinny dipped in cow ponds, threw dried cow patties at each other like frisbees - if you werenโ€™t home by dinner, you didnโ€™t eat. I wouldnโ€™t trade anything from my childhood for the technology of today.

Born early sixties, and lived this too. Don't want to toot our own horn too much but I teach, and the current generation is definitely more dependent on grownups or the state. Also they seem less tolerant of diverse opinions.

I always unequivocally, habitually share โ€œWe didnโ€™t really know how good we had it.โ€ We just did! Amidst being bombarded by AIDS, teachers sharing we wonโ€™t make it to the year 2000, in the 1980โ€™s, due to nuclear war, us โ€˜70โ€™s kids still lived life, and we lived it to the fullest! We would spend house on the streets playing, until Mum called us in. Weโ€™d hide in cupboards with the long phone cord to speak to our friends. Going to the movies on school holidays was a treat, and absolute blast! And weโ€™d go with our cousins. Only 2 stations on the TV. Roller skates were everything, weโ€™d spend hours roller skating. We were captivated by the view master toy, with the strip of film weโ€™d insert, that would keep us occupied for so long, not to mention the kaleidoscope ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Those were the days my friends, we thought theyโ€™d never endโ€ฆ.

Love this !! Grew up In the 70s and loved it ! Huge reader, built forts, built rafts, on a bike for hours , relaxing against a tree by myself, studied the clouds, rode horses, played all sports, fishing. Swimming, climbed trees, snowball fights, climbing mountains, loved skate boarding no helmet or pads! Spent hours in the woods and just doing all the time !! Loved my bedroom for music, reading , dreaming and just being !! Drank from the hose, catching fireflyโ€™s with a glass mason jar, and my mom asked only make sure we were home by dinner !! 3 brothers and our dogs -Collies! It was amazing , free, and just fun !!!

Sadly, it is those who grew up with substantial unsupervised freedom that later restricted their own childrenโ€™s independenceโ€”limiting outdoor play, walking alone, drinking from the hose, roaming neighborhoods on bikes, etc

Iโ€™ve repeated this many times here; here I go again-When I was 12 yo (1968) we were learning about mainframe computers in the military, and I went to my mother and said if this ever gets loose, weโ€™re gonna have terrible mayhem. She asked why do you say that I said I donโ€™t know.โญ๏ธ

Yup. But, of course, we always got home when the street lights were on because we wanted to stay out as long as possible and we had no idea when the bloody lights were coming on. Or we got home in time for The Jetsons or The Flintstones. We knew instinctively when they were on.
