Introducing cmux: the open-source terminal built for coding agents. - Vertical tabs - Blue rings around panes that need attention - Built-in browser - Based on Ghostty When Claude Code needs you, the pane glows blue and the sidebar tells you why. No Electron/Tauri. Just Swift/Appkit.

I run a lot of Claude Code and Codex sessions in parallel. I was using Ghostty with a bunch of split panes, and relying on native macOS notifications to know when an agent needed me. But Claude Code's notification body is always just "Claude is waiting for your input" with no context, and with enough tabs open, I couldn't even read the titles anymore. So we fixed it:

I tried a few coding orchestrators but most of them were Electron/Tauri apps and the performance bugged me. I also just prefer the terminal since GUI orchestrators lock you into their workflow. And I couldn't set up my layout the way I wanted it. So I built cmux as a native macOS app in Swift/AppKit. It uses libghostty for terminal rendering and reads your existing Ghostty config for themes, fonts, colors, and more.

cmux also has a built-in browser with a scriptable CLI with the same API as @vercel's agent-browser. Agents can snapshot the accessibility tree, click elements, fill forms, and evaluate JS, all from the terminal. Split a browser pane next to Claude Code and let it interact with your dev server directly.

Fire This seems like the perfect sweet spot between a Terminal and GUI orchestrator Does it have an easy way to support reading and searching through files? (Like cmd-p or cmd-shift-f in Cursor/VS Code)

Lawrence Chen's profile picture
Lawrence Chen7 months ago

thanks! currently cmd p lets you search through terminal names. files is a good idea! can also do rg or fzf since it's just a terminal. will file an issue for this though!

The form factor of cmd-shift-f in VS Code is nicer than rg fzf I have mapped to cmt-t so that's close enough

this is clean. the "which pane needs my attention" problem is real. we built the layer above this. agent orchestrator handles which agents to spawn, worktree isolation, merge sequencing, CI failure routing. the terminal is a swappable plugin (tmux by default, but cmux could slot right in). different layers, both needed. @composio

You know what would be nice? To make it orchestrate the execution of series of prompts that I could have in a folder. It should wait the previous prompt is done completely to the take next one. It would automate my workflows.

Lawrence Chen's profile picture
Lawrence Chen7 months ago

super interesting! if you want, you could hack up a bash script that does this and opens stuff in cmux workspaces/panels using cmux cli! (`cmux --help`)

sweet, I'm going from warp to cmux, love the idea of a browser in the CLI - need a nice native md file viewer inside the CLI as well.

let me know what else you want to see in cmux! someone has a PR up for markdown editor already will take a look soon!

brother, we should be able to make a screen temporarily full screen and the back down to original place like tmux.. not sure if this is a feature.. i looked around couldnt find it anywhere in the menus

like this? (out in nightly) or something else

yes this exactly! I'll update the current version - thankyou! 🫡

Smart to build on Ghostty natively instead of wrapping in Electron. The notification ring concept solves a real pain point - been running parallel Claude Code sessions in tmux and missing prompts constantly. Will give this a try.

Hey Lawrence, honestly this is amazing, well done an congrats! I had a questions, could you please advise the when to us manaflow vs cmux? Is manaflow built on top of cmux? I like the idea of manaflow and would love to be able to use all of cmux but with some of manaflow features What is your current set up overall? We seem really aligned!

Lawrence Chen's profile picture
Lawrence Chen7 months ago

thanks!! for now, probably don't use manaflow. you can likely fully move to cmux, which is a completely separate product. manaflow historically was useful for tasks that you have high confidence can be zero shot. but cmux is great for tasks that need back and forth, and if you have a HQ setup similar to mine (where a single Claude is pinned to the top, and it talks to all my panes for me), it'll have a pretty a good ux for both workflows. and we highlight recommend trying out the cmux cli (`cmux --help`) to see if you can build your own orchestrator similar to cmux HQ! we're gonna gradually add all the niceties of manaflow to cmux as extensions, like the diff view, screenshots, and heatmaps etc... stay tuned!

Will there be a premium sub option I’d like to support and get cool features

Lawrence Chen's profile picture
Lawrence Chen7 months ago

appreciate the support! what do you think would be the biggest value adds that you would be willing to pay for? some ideas: - cloud VM workspaces (maybe GPUs too) - cmux subscription/LLM gateway that let's you use claude code/codex/opencode etc... - companion mobile app that syncs with your mac cmux terminal with push notifications or anything else?

Numman Ali's profile picture
Numman Ali7 months ago

1. Look at what warp offers (not the coding agent) 2. Cmux assistant that can give me context on every workspace, tab and panel - simple at first but later could expand to handle messaging between terminals/workspaces from messaging channels 3. Mobile would be good but no idea how you can achieve that from a good UX/product perspective 4. Cloud workspace - everything in that space is running 24/7 but I can connect locally from Mac app or maybe via web or other approach but wouldn’t want performance downgrade 5. Like you have browser tabs, add Code editor and other options That’s what I can think of atm

Lawrence Chen's profile picture
Lawrence Chen7 months ago

2 is very interesting to me!

Numman Ali's profile picture
Numman Ali7 months ago

If I was to give you a vision statement Help me focus all my mind space on the work I’m doing Make context switching a thing of the past through smart product options Tiny tiny detail that helped with this, when I held the command key all keyboard shortcuts came up Hints and suggestions to make me faster with keyboard nav etc would be better An assistant that i can my dictation key (I use wispr) to say “what’s the status of prod debug”, “show me the browser screen for retail” Probably would tie in with auto naming workspace, tabs etc And having a hierarchical view option in the command palette as well

yaaaa nailed it! I gave a bunch of feedback to the orchestration teams, but could never figure out why I didn't like the feel of their multi-agent sidebars. This is literally it. It feels like my terminal, not a chat app. tabs + browser is a nice touch. Can it use --chrome to browse without needing to keep the tab open? that was always my biggest gripe Will start playing around, amazing job!

Is there some quick start guide with Claude code? I wasn't able to start multi-agent with multi-panel layout from Claude code (it works in tmux for me).

Very cool. I tinkered with something similar bc of how poorly terminals integrate with AI agents. I've been frustrated by the cognitive overhead without it. Looking forward to following along, starred!

Vertical tabs is a nice design choice.

simpler interfaces reduce cognitive load, which is why i'm intrigued by the idea of a terminal that can proactively signal what needs attention.

If I ssh in, can I attach to a cmux session?

Lawrence Chen's profile picture
Lawrence Chen7 months ago

currently ssh support is minimal (basically just ssh like you would in any other terminal, and use tmux/screen inside if you want persistence) we're gonna add native ssh support to cmux though, so you can have an entire workspace with native cmux tabs/splits/browser connected directly to the remote machine. and all with tmux-like persistence. but still a WIP!
