Where most zkVMs adopt RISC-V by default, Ziren uses MIPS - an ISA whose characteristics better align with the needs of circuit construction. Fixed 32-bit instruction width, low-entropy encoding, dense opcodes, and ISA stability simplify decode logic and reduce the circuit complexity of proof generation. It’s the more difficult path to implement from the standpoint of building a zkVM, but the better long-term foundation for ZK, offering developers an application base they can rely on. Deep dive:

Recent updates to @eth_proofs demonstrate the practical advances enabled by Ziren. By swapping the guest VM from Revm to Reth and optimizing the block/state preparation layer using debug_traceBlock and parallel account fetching, we reduced state preparation time from over 5 minutes to under 30 seconds - more than doubling total throughput and moving closer to real-time proving.
