Deadly shootout in Northern California after officers apparently failed to properly search a suspect before placing him in the front seat of his cruiser. Mt. Shasta Police Department and Weed Police Department released body cam footage showing the incident that happened on March 21, 2026, during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 near the north Weed off-ramp. An officer pulled over a car traveling northbound at the north Weed off-ramp for multiple violations, including excessive window tint and an unsafe lane change. The officer called for help with a K-9 drug sniff, and a Mt. Shasta police officer responded to assist. During the search, the Weed officer found a large amount of suspected methamphetamine hidden in a stereo speaker box. As the officer approached the man, who was sitting in front of the patrol car, the man pulled out a gun from his waist and pointed it at the officer. The officer then shot the man. Medical help was provided at the scene, and the man was taken to Dignity Mt. Shasta for treatment, where he later died from his injuries. The officer came back, gave him the ticket, told him where to appear if he wanted to contest and pointed out where he could mail in the fee for the ticket since he didn’t live nearby. The man said okay. The officer asked if he had any questions, the man said no, the officer said be safe and that was that. So many people said that is a normal interaction with police officers. All the other stuff is someone seeking attention. 💯 It should be this easy every time. Kudos to both those men. 👏 When you do what you are asked to do, there is never a problem, imho. Is this how your traffic stops have went? (Mine did) Why can’t they all be like this for everyone?
