➤ Census is a Union subject and is listed at serial number 69 in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution. The legal framework governing it is provided by the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990 ➤ The Census Act contains a significant provision Section 15 under which personal information provided is treated as strictly confidential. It cannot be made public under the RTI Act, used as evidence in any court of law, or shared with any institution ➤ States and Union Territories play a crucial role in this process; their entire administrative machinery is mobilised to complete fieldwork at the grassroots level ➤ The previous census was conducted in the year 2011. #WATCH | Saharanpur | On Centre's decision to conduct caste census, Aazad Samaj Party—Kanshi Ram, Chandra Shekhar Azad says, "The Azad Samaj Party has consistently raised this demand for a long time. On the 3rd of February, during the Lok Sabha session, I began by raising the issue of the caste census. Even when we were in Delhi in 2024, during a major movement held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, our first demand was for the caste census... When we conducted the review program across 18 circles, starting with Saharanpur, our first demand was the same. We understand the importance of the caste census, and I believe that if a caste census is conducted, we will get valuable data, especially regarding the backward classes. Even the general category will get clarity about the distribution of resources—how much education people have, who owns how much land, who has jobs, etc... However, the government has only talked about it and not set any deadline for implementation. Many in our party believe this is being discussed now because of the Bihar elections, since Nitish ji has already conducted a caste census in Bihar... I believe only after the caste census is actually conducted will we be able to say more. Nothing has been finalized yet—what topics will be included, when it will start, when it will end—all of this is still undecided... I believe only after the caste census is actually conducted will we be able to say more. BJP is already in power in Bihar, and a caste census was held in the state two years ago. BJP should tell what the Bihar govt did with the findings of the caste survey. Congress is in power in Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh, so who has stopped Rahul Gandhi from making schemes based on data available? He has recently awakened to the fact that the situation can be improved with a caste census. You are not getting caste census done to help those communities but to spread communal disharmony for political gains."

Reportedly, after sending the tigress's photographs to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for verification, it was found that there was no record of her before, meaning this tigress is being included as a new tiger in the country's tiger census. I request the Government of India 👇 ⦿ Immediately stop the census process. ⦿ Ensure that the IDPs are made to return to their homes. ⦿ Law and order must be established. ⦿ These armed groups who are loitering around must be stopped so that a proper census can be conducted. ⦿ The unresolved issues of the earlier census must be looked into afresh, with a genuine and judicious process. ⦿ NRC and other foreigners’ tribunals must be instituted in order to delineate who is a citizen and who is not in the state of Manipur. : A.
