Well trained to make cups of tea, which is 99% of the job. The other 1% being shutting streets unnecessarily after fires.

Is the Fire Service a registered charity, asking for your colleague in Transport, just in case she gets your job next.

Why have you cut the manning of the fire station in Hawick at the weekends and put people at risk in the town? Pointless having training if we've no firefighters to attend for 20 miles or more @Rachael2Win

1. Massive Real-Terms Reductions According to the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), the SFRS resource budget has been cut by £58 million a year in real terms since the regional brigades were centralized into a single national organization in 2013. This underfunding has contributed to the loss of over 1,200 firefighter posts across Scotland during the SNP's tenure. 2. The 2026/27 Budget Shortfall In the draft Scottish Budget announced in January 2026, Finance Secretary Shona Robison allocated £436 million to the fire service. [1, 2, 3] •The Problem: The SFRS explicitly requested a £36.6 million uplift in resource funding to stay afloat, but the SNP government granted only an £18 million increase. [1] •The Consequences: Fire service chiefs testified to Holyrood's Criminal Justice Committee in February 2026 that this leaves a £6 million resource funding gap for the financial year. Furthermore, the government’s latest Scottish Spending Review projects flat-cash settlements through 2029, which could force the loss of another 500 firefighter jobs over three years to balance the books. 3. Station Closures and Operational Changes As a direct consequence of long-term funding pressures, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Board approved a sweeping Service Delivery Review. To rein in costs, the service confirmed the permanent closure of seven fire stations(including Yorkhill in Glasgow and Musselburgh in East Lothian) alongside downgrading weekend/night cover and removing appliances at dozens of other locations. 4. Severe Capital Backlog Beyond staff and operational costs, the fire service faces a staggering £818 million capital backlog required to repair dilapidated stations, modernize over-age vehicles, and replace equipment. Despite this massive demand, the SNP government increased the SFRS capital budget by just £1.4 million, bringing the total to £48.4 million—far below the £61 million fire chiefs stated they desperately needed. [1, 2] The Scottish Government routinely defends its position by highlighting that it provides "record cash funding" to emergency services and blames tight block grants from Westminster for spending constraints. However, the FBU and opposition parties argue the SNP's "managed decline" of the service is causing slower 999 response times and directly compromising public safety.
