It seems obvious from this video that the administration worked with big U.S. oil companies before the attack to line up billions of dollars in capital for developing Venezuela’s oil reserves, yet they couldn’t be bothered to consult Congress.

American taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook for risky foreign oil projects that boost Big Oil profits and won’t actually lower costs here at home. Rebuilding Venezuela’s crumbling oil infrastructure could cost tens of billions of dollars, and the only real winners would be the big oil companies. My bill would forbid a single cent of U.S. taxpayer dollars going to these projects. If oil companies want in, they can pay for it themselves.

If oil companies want to invest in Venezuela’s oil infrastructure, they can do it with their own money. That’s why I’m introducing legislation to make clear that U.S. taxpayer dollars cannot be used to do it. Our priority should be investing here at home, building energy we control, lowering costs for families, and ending our dependence on foreign oil, not propping up oil infrastructure abroad.
