As the sun sets this evening in Jerusalem – as has happened every Friday evening for the past few decades – Muslims will leave the Old City after late afternoon prayers, and Jews will enter the Old City for their Shabbat evening prayers. The video was taken from Damascus Gate. It’s the entrance to the Muslim quarter of the Old City, and yet people of all faiths feel free to frequent it, to come and go as they please. This is my city – the capital of capitals – a citadel of three different faiths, home to synagogues and mosques and holy shrines. It is the capital of the promised land, a land promised to Ibrahim/Abraham, the forefather of both Muslims and Jews. It is the capital of Israelis and the capital of Palestinians. This little video I took last Friday evening shows something so simple – how normal it is to co-exist. How normal it is to share this sacred city. How normal it is to live together in a land promised to all of us.

This was outside a Washington DC restaurant this evening where a Catholic dinner event was being held (I was one of a number attending). This group of protesters (there were four but you see three in this video) mounted a very high decibel noise and strobe and laser light assault on the restaurant, which is a family business. It went on for about two hours. The idea was to ruin the event and harm the business of the venue. It was to say the least, bizarre. Though I did have to laugh at them, madder than a box of monkeys. Felt bad for the business owners though.

In the wake of the horrible Hanukkah massacre in Bondi Beach, some people, including fringe anti-Zionist Jewish voices, are taking this bloody opportunity to weaponize antisemitism against the Jewish state. They claim Jews were safer before Israel. History says otherwise. As we’re celebrating Hanukkah, this is a reminder that this Jewish holiday is not symbolism. It is a warning. The Hellenistic Jews believed assimilation would protect them. It didn’t. When violence came, it did not care how integrated they were. Only that they were Jewish. Blaming Jewish self-determination for antisemitism is a moral rot. Israel exists because the story of Hanukkah keeps repeating. But the difference now is that we have one Jewish state that can, and we will protect us.

Additionally, there is bafflingly no utterance of the word “antisemitism” whatsoever. A woman “investigated” to prove a Mediterranean restaurant is actually Israeli. Her proof was a single Hebrew word on the menu. This is a perfect example of the transition from Chanukah antisemitism to Purim antisemitism. Chanukah antisemitism calls for Jews to erase key aspects of our identity, promising acceptance in return for erasure. Think of the false statements a few years back about how “Israeli food doesn’t exist.” They lied saying Jewish food developed over centuries living in the Middle East wasn’t ours.
