A 40-year-old patent has finally been brought to life. That's the Y-zipper. A 3D-printed three-sided fastener that transitions any object from flexible to rigid and back again. The robotics application is the one that caught my attention. A quadruped robot that adjusts its leg stiffness depending on terrain, switching between rigid and flexible in real time without additional motors or complex mechanical systems. Supportless, free-form 3D printing! ⛓️ By using low-melting-point Fields' metal and shaping it through surface tension, this process can create highly conductive 3D structures in a single pass, no supports, no post-processing. Pretty interesting way of thinking about additive manufacturing, especially for electronics and functional metal parts. Just wow. This guy was determined to prove to his wife that his 3D printer wasn’t a waste of money. When she broke the handle on the crockpot lid, he saw his chance and printed her a replacement. It’s a nice thought, and it’ll probably work fine for a little while. But because most 3D printing plastics don’t handle heat and steam very well, there’s a good chance this handle won’t last long before it starts to soften or break. It’s the thought that counts… until the handle starts to sag 😭 Have you ever made something on your 3D printer that looked like a great idea at the time?

It can be assembled into various forms depending on the scenario, including bipedal, wheeled, and humanoid torso configurations, and its end effectors are also interchangeable. Each form of the robot is driven by a VLA model. It can perform complex movements and can also be integrated into existing workflows to perform tasks. It's worth mentioning that this solves the problem of which type of humanoid robot to use. Each user can assemble the robot in a configuration that suits their specific scenario, making it truly flexible and versatile – it doesn't necessarily have to be bipedal or wheeled... I look forward to seeing more real-world use cases.
