The robot Andrew Martin in Bicentennial Man (1999) was played by the legendary Robin Williams. Before his passing, Sam Neill said Williams was "irresistibly, outrageously, irrepressibly, gigantically funny" on set, yet "the saddest person I ever met." In the scenes where Andrew the robot tells jokes to the family, all of Williams' jokes were completely unscripted. Sam Neill and his co-stars' on-screen reactions to those jokes were genuine. Neill recalled that the warmth between their characters reflected their real-life trailer conversations, where Williams seemed "the loneliest man on a lonely planet" and "inconsolably solitary."
