The signal is policy. This isn’t about defending Israel. It’s about the Greater Israel project and Israel First politics. Two different things. Israel shouldn’t be, and don’t need to be, a protector of the U.S. You have a two state solution bc Israel First overreach and the Greater Israel project, which aims to expand into Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and all the way to the Sinai. It’s not feasible. It can’t be done with American support without dragging us into endless conflicts. Netanyahu understands this. I’ve been hammering it for a while. That’s what this is about. Now Ron Dermer, one of Israel’s sharpest strategic thinkers, under Netanyahu’s guidance, is putting forward a proposal for independence and sovereignty. That’s a step in the right direction.

Today, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant in relation to the war in Gaza. We and many others have urged the government for months to do the right thing and abide by the ruling of the ICC. Today, the Prime Minister did that in accepting that Canada would recognize the arrest warrants. That means, in theory, that Netanyahu and Gallant could be arrested if they stepped foot in Canada. This is an important moment. Canada has chosen to do the right thing. International law and a rules-based international order is important - today, a signal has been sent that no one is above the law.
