Christopher Nolan's insistence on absolute realism in Dunkirk (2017) led to one of the most logistically complex aerial shoots in modern cinema. Rather than relying on green screens or computer-generated imagery (CGI), Nolan committed to capturing the weight, speed, and danger of genuine aerial combat by using actual World War II-era aircraft. To recreate the Royal Air Force's defense of the evacuation, the production managed to source three actual Supermarine Spitfires, two Mark IAs and one Mark VB. These incredibly rare, multi-million-dollar historic artifacts were flown by veteran stunt pilots to film the authentic weaving dogfights over the English Channel.

Christopher Nolan says The Odyssey is a promise he made to himself at 16, watching a volcano documentary in a dome-screen IMAX in Chicago. Christopher Nolan: "Going to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago when I was 16 years old, seeing a documentary about volcanoes in the OmniMax format, and thinking... why on earth isn't Hollywood using this format?
