On January 26, 2006, Joaquin Phoenix crashed his car in the Hollywood Hills after his brakes failed. Trapped upside down, he heard knocking on the passenger window and a German voice saying, “Just relax.” Phoenix replied, “There’s the air bag, I can’t see and I’m saying, ‘I’m fine. I am relaxed.’” The man answered, “No, you’re not.” Phoenix then realized who had come to his rescue: “And suddenly I said to myself, That’s Werner Herzog! … There’s something so calming and beautiful about Werner Herzog’s voice.
