Tesla’s vision-only approach to solve FSD got laughed at for many years. People called it reckless, said just cameras would never be enough, and even claimed Tesla was cutting corners. Fast forward to today, it’s pretty clear who was right. “It’s so obvious you can solve this with cameras. Why wouldn’t you solve with cameras? It’s 2026. The self-driving problem is not a sensor problem, it’s an AI problem. The cameras have enough information already. It’s a problem of extracting the information, which is an AI problem.” - Ashok Elluswamy, VP of AI at Tesla. Just like us humans, we drive with eyes, we walk with eyes, literally we do everything with our eyes. We don’t have lidar spinning and laser beams on our heads. We simply see the world and our brain figures it out… all from vision. For so many years, the industry treated autonomy like it was a hardware problem. Like “if cameras struggle, just add more sensors.” That’s exactly how companies like Waymo ended up with sensor towers that look like crazy science projects. So ugly btw too… That approach might have made sense in 2008, but not today! Bc back then, AI wasn’t good enough to truly understand the world. So engineers had no choice but to lean on lidar and radar for help. But today, cameras capture insane amounts of information, I’m talking billions of pixels every second. The thing that was missing was AI intelligence. And when AI can understand why a car is slowing or why a pedestrian is hesitating, or real world things, you just need a better brain instead of more sensors. And now, everyone else is realizing this… the future of autonomy was always about understanding the world through vision, just like we humans do. That’s the bet that Elon and Tesla made early on… he was already years ahead of everyone, when everyone was doubling down on LiDAR and radar, even when so many people mocked them for switching early. Here's Elon Musk in 2020 explaining why cameras with AI vision is all you need to achieve full autonomy. “The entire road network is designed for passive optical, essentially vision. In order to make a car drive properly, you have to solve vision. At the point at which you solve vision, you really don't need any other instruments. A careful human driver can drive with an extremely good track record. Unlike a human, the computer does not get tired, it has 360-degree surround cameras, it's got three cameras pointing forward. It's like being able to see with eyes in the back of your head. Vision is the way to go. There's some value to active optical for a wavelength that's occlusion-penetrating, so it can see through fog, or rain, or dust. The Tesla Full Self-Driving software, which is really just AI and cameras, we don’t use radars or LIDAR or anything like that. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe in new interview on self-driving: "Tesla's got a huge fleet. So our approach is we have to catch up with them and compete. And so we're going to have more cameras with better dynamic range. We're going to supplement that with LiDAR that provides better safety for edge case conditions and allows us to train the vision models faster. And the incremental cost to do that is relatively small. And in fact any of the incremental costs that would have been there on its own is offset by the fact that we brought inference in house and reduced the cost of our inference platform so dramatically from what we have in your car. Your car uses an Nvidia inference platform. I say all this because in like the infinite long-term you know, you could make the case that once the models are very very robust you could have less cameras or you may be able to get away with less radar. It's not clear yet if that's the case for covering all these corner cases."

During the snowstorm that is sweeping through the U.S. right now, the safest vehicle you can be in is in a Tesla with FSD bc it can react faster than any human or gas car. An electric motors respond in milliseconds. When a wheel starts to slip on snow or ice, Tesla’s sensors detect it up to 1,000 times per second, and the computer instantly cuts or redistributes power to the wheels with grip. On the other hand, gas cars have major delay and don’t have this capability… That means if your Tesla hits a tiny patch of ice, the car corrects it right away, even before you even feel it, almost like the car is thinking ahead. If you don’t believe me listen to the man that built it. Joe: “What happens if you get sideways in the snow? Like, does it correct for that?” Elon: “Yeah. Electric cars have really great traction control because the reaction time is so fast. So, with a gasoline car, you’ve got a lot of latency. It takes a while for the engine to react, but for electric motors, incredibly precise…. But to an electric motor, it’s operating at the millisecond level. So, it can turn on and off traction within, like, inches of getting on… let’s say, you’re driving on a patch of ice, it will turn traction off, and then turn it on a couple inches right after the ice, like a little patch of ice because in the frame of the electric motor, you’re moving incredibly slowly. You’re like a, you’re a snail. You’re just moving so slowly because it can see at a thousand frames a second. And so, it’s like, say ‘one Mississippi’, it just thought about things a thousand times.” Joe: “So, it has realized that your wheels are not getting traction. Even my kids know that in a world full of Tesla Robotaxis, Waymo is dunzo. It’s really not that complicated. Waymo needs expensive LiDAR, radar, cameras, specialized hardware, detailed maps, and a massive amount of infrastructure just to operate in certain areas. Tesla’s approach is completely different. Cameras are cheap. Tesla can mass-produce vehicles at a scale Waymo can’t come close to, use the same AI system across millions of cars, collect massive amounts of real-world driving data, and improve the entire fleet through software updates. That’s where the economics become almost impossible to compete with. The cheaper you can build the car, the cheaper you can operate it, and the more vehicles you can put on the road, the cheaper you can eventually make every ride. Waymo might prove Robotaxis can work. Tesla’s goal is to make them cheap enough and build enough of them to be everywhere. That’s the difference people still don’t understand. This isn’t just about who has the better Robotaxi today. It’s about who can build millions of them, drive down the cost per mile, and scale across the world. Even my kids understand the end game. Tesla Robotaxis are going to be everywhere. In the world where Tesla Robotaxis are flooded all around the world, it will very difficult for Waymo to survive.
