In A Better Tomorrow, John Woo dressed Chow Yun-fat in a long Armani trenchcoat, in part, because of how cool it made him look in slow motion. He said the coat’s flowing fabric made Chow appear “easy, elegant and smooth,” while exaggerating his movements during action scenes.

The hospital shootout in Hard Boiled (1992) is peak John Woo. Doves flying through hallways, bullets everywhere, Chow Yun-fat sliding into rooms with dual pistols like the laws of physics stopped applying. Action cinema at its most gloriously excessive.

Top five all-time shoot out. Chow Yun Fat almost got blown to pieces in the explosion at the end. Clip is from the ShoutFactory A Better Tomorrow trilogy set A Better Tomorrow II Blu-ray (sadly I'm not able to rip 4k discs at the moment, but the 4k looks amazing).

John Woo's "A Better Tomorrow" (1986) was made at a time when comedy films saw mainstream success in Hong Kong. The studio was not expecting the movie to perform well financially. Tsui Hark recalled that unhappy studio executives asked him to "burn the film" midway through production. As a result, 'A Better Tomorrow' was minimally advertised in Hong Kong. The studio was also concerned with Chow Yun-Fat, who was considered "Box Office poison": unlike the other actors, his portrait was not included in the film's publicity stills, and he received third billing in the credits behind Lung Ti and Leslie Cheung. To everyone's surprise, the movie was a massive box office success. Chow Yun-Fat wore Alain Delon sunglasses and trench coat in the movie to emulate Delon's character in "Le Samouraï" (1967). Because of the popularity of "A Better Tomorrow", young men in Hong Kong began trying to emulate Chow by wearing long coats and sunglasses, despite the local humidity. Because of that, the Alain Delon sunglasses were sold out in Asia. Delon sent John Woo a personal thank you note. P.S: On this day, 40 years ago, "A Better Tomorrow" (1986) was released in Hong Kong.

I understand why President Trump wants a fighter like Matt Gaetz cleaning up the DOJ. After they undermined and sabotaged his first administration, he wants strong advocates to ensure he can govern effectively. The President deserves to put people he trusts in these positions.

Jalen Milroe seems to be a lot more like Russell Wilson than Geno Smith in this sense: he doesn’t get too high or too low. Here he was talking to John Boyle about his first start. He said the fumbles, like any QB turnover, were on him. “I’ve got to be better with ball security.”
