I believe I won the championship this year my way, by being a fair driver, by trying to be an honest driver. At times, could I have been more aggressive and got off the brakes and had a few people over? I certainly could have done, and maybe I would need to do more of that in the future. But did I need to do it this year? Is that the way I want to go racing? Is that me? It's not. It seems to be working okay for me this week. But still a long way to go. QUESTION: Your post-shot reactions are the stuff of legend, but also David Feherty makes a point quite often of how quickly you recover and refocus on the next shot. Does this course force you to do that even more? HATTON: I mean, yeah. This golf course can be very frustrating. Obviously I lose my head around the simplest of golf courses. Maybe guys playing this week, it kind of brings them closer to my level of losing their mind. I'm happy with how I've played the last two days. Even today when it was difficult, I was in some difficult positions, I still didn't feel like I was hitting that bad a golf shot. But it kind of happens around here, and ultimately just happy with how the back nine played out. Yeah, looking forward to the weekend now. QUESTION: Speaking of the weekend, the expectation level starting the week probably didn't sound like it was that high based on what you said yesterday. Does it change with the way you've played through two rounds? HATTON: I mean, I would say that the last two rounds have allowed me to feel more comfortable with what I'm trying to do and feel with the golf swing, and generally I feel like I've hit a lot of really good shots. Kind of taking confidence from that and hoping that I can keep the same feelings going and keep hitting good golf shots. Jon Rahm shot a 3 under par 67 to take a share of the lead at the PGA Championship. After the round, he praised the PGA of America for the set up of Aronimink this week: “I would like to know who came up with that, by the way. Honestly, when I heard people talking about 20-under par, it made me question my ability to read a golf course, because I was looking at the greens and where they could put pin locations and possible wind, I just -- my mind was never -- I actually got worried. I'm like if somebody shoots 20-under, the amount of records they're going to break this week would be unheard of. “You know why I think that can happen is also the fairways up here by the numbers are probably wide. They don't play as wide as they really are. Holes like 7, 10, 15, with how much slope you have to the fairway, you have to hit a very accurate golf shot to be in it. Like that, you can add too 2, 4 -- maybe not on 6, but like I said, 10, 12, 15, 16, right? “You need to hit -- with the slope of the fairway and the wind going with the slope of the fairway, it plays a lot more difficult than I think a lot of people would have foreseen at first with how much they're rolling out. And credit to the PGA for the setup. They found some incredible hard pin locations out there. Usually when we're practicing, we put our disks out, and there's definitely quite a few that I would have told Adam, man, there's no way they're going to put a pin there, and they did. So we found a way to keep it all close together. “As hard as it is to play, the challenge can also be kind of fun if you do well. That's probably the reason why the leaderboard is so bunched up and it's going to be such a good Sunday tomorrow. So in that sense, showmanship-wise, they've done a great job.” Jon was also asked if a win for him this week would be a boost for LIV Golf as they look for investment outside of the PIF: “Honestly, in a week like this, one, I'm thinking more about myself. I'm not going to take on anything outside what I can control when it comes to competing tomorrow. “If I do get it done and I sit here again tomorrow, then you can ask me the same question, and I'll give you an answer. Jon Rahm hit a flyer on the 7th hole today and then took a swing in frustration at the grass and ended up hitting a volunteer with his divot. After the round he was incredibly apologetic and fully owned up to his poor etiquette: “Thanks for reminding me of that. I got a flier on my second shot that went long. It's not a good spot. Just out of frustration, I tried to make an air swing, just over the grass, and I wasn't looking, took a divot, and unfortunately, I hit a volunteer. “Yeah, it hit him, and unfortunately it hit him in the shoulder and then the face. After opening rounds of 67 and 68, Justin Thomas has shot his lowest 36 hole total of the season to be T3 at the Truist Championship. After the round, he said this is the best he’s felt since his return from injury: “Yeah, it's definitely, I would say so. I mean, I played really well last week, I just putted horrifically. I had a very tough time on those greens. But I played really, really, really well at Augusta and I just had zero to show for it. I drove it well, I felt like I hit a lot of good iron shots. Just was kind of one of those weeks where I couldn't get anything going, couldn't make that putt or get that ball up-and-down that I needed to to either keep momentum or get momentum. Scottie Scheffler has made golf look easy over the last few years, but he’s clearly frustrated with his game this week: “I felt like I was going to shoot about 90 today. “I don't know if you were out there on the course, but I was going to be hard to find if you were out watching my group. I felt like I got my first birdie putt of the day on the 13th hole. I maybe had one on 11, but I couldn't imagine I hit more than six or seven greens today. So around this golf course, with heavy rough and deep bunkers, you got to be hitting the ball in the right spots and for a long time today that was definitely not the case for me.” Scottie was visibly frustrated yesterday at the Memorial and had a long, heated discussion with his caddie Ted Scott after dunking a ball into the water. After rallying with 3 birdies in his last 6 holes today for a level par 72, he currently sits T20 and he was asked how proud he was to comfortably make the cut after looking in danger earlier in the round: “I think I grind like that every day. I think that's just part of the game. That's maybe some of the worst I've hit it in a couple years out there and I still managed to shoot even par around a golf course that requires to you strike the ball really well. Yeah, I'm definitely very proud of stuff like that. “This tournament was one that definitely could have got away from me, but right now I'm only nine shots back and still have a chance going into the weekend. 24 year old Spaniard David Puig shot a 3 under par 67 to climb inside the top 10 of the PGA Championship, just 3 shots off the lead. I can only do what I can do. I was able to take care of what I needed to do today pretty well to get me over the line. I knew it wasn't going to be a day where even par, 1-under was going to get it done for me. I knew I had to go out there and get it. Just kept pushing myself the whole way, and here we are JERRY: Did you ever hit some shots, notably the bunker shot in addition to so many others this week, where you just shook your head, like, I can't believe how good this is going? HERBERT: There's definitely a lot of shots -- I can think of the first shot on 10, I kind of pull one, and you're asking for it to get a good lie in the hay, lands in the rough and kicks all the way down there, you get on the green and make eagle. I think it provides quite a nice bit of variety with shorter par-4s, a couple of longer par-4s. The par-3s, there's three pretty long ones and a shorter one. "I think in this day and age I'm not sure if it's going to test all aspects of your bag. There's going to be a lot of -- again, as I said, strategy off the tee is pretty nonexistent. "It's, basically, bash driver down there and then figure it out from there, which I think is a lot of these newer -- newly renovated -- I think about Oak Hill in 2023, here. When these traditional golf courses take a lot of trees out, it makes strategy not as much of a concern off the tee.
