JUST IN: COINBASE HEAD OF CRYPTOGRAPHY JUST SAID QUANTUM COMPUTING WILL FORCE #BITCOIN TO ABANDON ITS CORE IDEALS "NOT YOUR KEYS, NOT YOUR COINS" WILL NO LONGER HOLD WHEN QUANTUM ARRIVES, "THE PERSON WHO CAN SIGN IS NO LONGER NECESSARILY THE OWNER" "THAT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP CAN NO LONGER...

it's dumb to just focus this on BTC, if that happens basically nothing is worth anything, your bank account, your stocks, your government id, nothing, anything can get hacked

right we should just leave our coins on coinbase

quantum computers can't even stay coherent for a minute and we're out here rewriting bitcoin's entire philosophy in the group chat already.

Nothing would be funnier if a decade goes by and literally nothing happens with quantum. And that’s still the most likely scenario.

Quantum computers don’t even exist in a way that is anywhere near a threat.

not quite. quantum breaks exposed public keys, not the idea. coins on never-used addresses keep their pubkey hidden, and a post-quantum signature upgrade covers the rest. the real risk is the ~6M btc already exposed 👀

Fud, blockstream already has a protocol ready to deploy at any moment. They are just improving it currently.

Can we get quantum to just do 1/100 what it would need to do to crack Bitcoin before worrying? Oh yeah, then how are they going to protect bank accounts, the Pentegon, etc. etc? Once they crack those, Bitcoin will be next.

This is ridiculous, we all know BTC will simply need to upgrade in time. I personally don’t think Quantum threat is anywhere near, it’s all being blown out of proportion

All right, I know this is gonna sound crazy. But bear with me, what if the people creating the Bitcoin quantum security system? Or whatever make it so Bitcoin has its own digital I. D you know, so it's like a digital ID within the Blockchain or the Bitcoin code? Or whatever, and I guess you can assign your Bitcoin or whatever Bitcoin you own to literally. You so like, I guess your name or if you wanna say, anonymous, then an alias and only that person can use the funds and it has to be some kind of real verification. The only that person can do not sure exactly what it would be. I'm sure somebody or multiple people who read this that are way smarter than me, can figure it out or think of something really genius. But I don't know, just some kind of way where it's something that cannot be replicated by AI. Or another person, it's just like it's you. You know, I don't know just a thought

He's right. We'll just have to go back to the old system: "It's the bank's money & they promise to pay you back." 🙄🤮 Nothing else will do. Shame on you for even thinking "Not Your Keys, Not Your Coins."

Quantum-resistant addresses before the threat is real, not after, is the only sane sequencing — migration takes years, and you cannot migrate coins whose owners are gone or whose keys are lost. The uncomfortable part: a large share of BTC sits in addresses that will never migrate, which means the network will eventually have to decide what to do with quantum-vulnerable coins. That decision is political as much as technical. Do you think the migration should be opt-in per holder, or enforced at the protocol level when the time comes?
