#Mpox outbreaks are caused by different strains of viruses called clades. The current outbreak in the Eastern #DRC is caused by a new offshoot of clade 1, called clade 1b, which causes more severe disease than clade 2. Clade 1b has been confirmed in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. Stopping transmission will require a comprehensive response, with communities at the centre. The Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations will meet soon to advise me on whether the outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern.

The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo "could be worse than the West Africa outbreak that was recorded in 2014-2016," Dr. Mesfin Tessima, senior director at the International Rescue Committee, told Ramy Inocencio. Tessima said officials haven't grasped "the scale of the problem" due to a lack of testing and case reporting, but he stressed the risk to the U.S. remains low. "We are doing catch-up, basically, until testing is ramped up, and we'll be able to identify every case, be able to follow up and identify the true magnitude of the problem," he said.
