#Mpox outbreaks are caused by different strains of viruses called clades. The current outbreak in the Eastern #DRC is caused by a new offshoot of clade 1, called clade 1b, which causes more severe disease than clade 2. Clade 1b has been confirmed in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. Stopping transmission will require a comprehensive response, with communities at the centre. The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo "could be worse than the West Africa outbreak that was recorded in 2014-2016," Dr. Mesfin Tessima, senior director at the International Rescue Committee, told Ramy Inocencio. Tessima said officials haven't grasped "the scale of the problem" due to a lack of testing and case reporting, but he stressed the risk to the U.S. remains low. "We are doing catch-up, basically, until testing is ramped up, and we'll be able to identify every case, be able to follow up and identify the true magnitude of the problem," he said.
