Just watched some in-possession bits from Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough, and although plenty of great accounts on here have already broken down how they set up with the ball, I thought I’d also share a few thoughts of my own. There’s been a lot of talk about their structure and... the methodical, sometimes slow, nature of their build-up, and I largely agree with that. It isn’t rigid; players aren’t locked into zones at all times, but there is a clear recurring picture. The left back holding width, the right back tucking inside, the 3-2 base in build up. That structure is very evident, but I'm not going to talk about that. What really caught my eye was the intention to change rhythms across all three thirds. The slow circulation mentioned can very quickly turn into sharp vertical play or quick combinations, often without warning. The centre backs, along with one of the central midfielders, seem key to this in deeper areas. They are often the ones responsible for accelerating the game during a passing sequence, whether through sudden carries, changes of direction, switches of play, or simply finding a brave pass through the press. In the middle third, the use of a staggered midfield and central overloads allows players to operate on diagonal angles to find and link passes, and when you add the constant movement from the wingers and the attacking midfielder, it regularly sets the stage for UBTs or third man combos\runs, creates the conditions for these tempo shifts. In the final third, similar principles apply, especially in wide areas where triangles are formed to facilitate combinations. Wingers and fullbacks are clearly encouraged to take on their man in 1v1s, and pass and move sequences are used to increase the tempo. While a lot of this play happens out wide, targeting central zones through diagonals or cut backs is also a recurring feature. On the downside, and although I felt the players always seem to be on the lookout for opportunities to increase the tempo during these passing sequences, it sometimes feels like they wait a bit too long before executing a quick action. That hesitation is, in my opinion, what gave their build-up its “slow” reputation.show more

Wingers scoring less, assisting less and becoming less of an attacking threat in the Prem. Saka, a great young player, has dropped off. Wingers now have it drilled into them to come back and support defensively when their fullbacks are attacked 1v1, turning it into a 1v2. Coaches are terrified of wingers cutting inside and connecting and opening the field internally, so the defensive winger is hauled back to help. All. The. Time. The defending winger now has a much larger distance to cover to get into an attacking position when play transitions. If he picks up the ball deep, all but the very best players cannot carry 70 yards and then deliver, they certainly cannot do it repeatedly. They lose their freshness, replaced with fatigue, in the key ‘trigger moments’ 1v1 or in front of goal. Their starting positions are too low. Too close to their own goal. Often, they are now used to simply facilitate circulation of the ball in Zone 2 as the wide player. They now have less opportunities and those opportunities are often started from deeper, so maybe it is not a suprise to see falling stats across the #7/#11 positions. Maybe it is not the individual wingers fault, but more of a symptom of the system.

Hexagons and Octagons Those who follow football and coaching will be well aware that there are trends that emerge and become the great break through in coaching, only to vanish quite quickly. A few stick around and become a staple. Such as the rondo, or the 4v4+4 Guardiola rondo variation. One that did not stick around in the coaching collective consciousness that possible should have was Thomas Tuchel’s use of hexagonal and octagonal playing areas in training sessions. Tuchel explained that cutting off the corners and angling the pitch forced “sharp diagonal” passes that would help break the press. The positioning of players outside the hexagon/octagon or players close to the edges will be manipulated into an open body shape by the angles of the pitch. Players are impacted by environmental constraints and embodied cognition, where the geography of the playing area influences their actions. This influence spreads to the creation of triangles and diamonds within the playing area due to the “funnel” like nature of the playing area. We can use the cut outside angles by placing bounce or target players on the exterior, influencing the movement and organisation internally. The inside players will not have to move wide as those areas are occupied. The internal players will seek to create passing angles using the positioning of the outside players and their internal team mates. The diamonds and triangles will appear. If we leave the spaces on the outside empty players can move to fill the spaces. These act as free spaces to receive from the goalkeeper or open spaces for attackers to overlap into, encouraging attacking combination play and crosses. A different way of using the space is to remove goals and goalkeepers from the ends and place bounce/target players on the outside. Players now can combine with the outside players, when they do so they are then free to finish into the outside goals. The condition can be extended to combining with the target player in the opposite side of the pitch before scoring, adding an element of switching play. The hexagon and octagon are versatile spaces that help to replicate aspects of the game. By funneling the spaces we impact players body shape, ability to play forward quickly, team shape (or small group shapes), players cutting in, defending centrally, the types of combination used and the angles of line breaking pass (diagonals). The angles are hugely significant for teams that value combinations and possession football, Straight passes and receiving angles are much easier to intercept and carry high risks for being counter attacked. Our build-up starting from GK is terrible, needs to be fixed —— I already did a thread on that on how to fix it + the thread on FDJ as a libero has a point on how to fix the build-up. We’re too direct, we play one of the CB’s and they try to break 2 lines in finding the CF (Lewa), it’s a high-risk, high-reward move that rarely functions. We need to move their press and make the players more ball-oriented after the first pass from Peña —— try to pin their players in a triangle cage and from there try to carry it/change the play because their 2nd line will be non-existent from the press waves.

Scotland - Building out from the Back I feel like there is a huge lack of clarity in the way we play & that responsibility sits with coaches as much as the players: > Are Defenders to Play? > Are the "CDM's" to Show & Build? > Fullbacks Allowed to Find Space? I have watched McKenna & Hendry play out successfully in Belgium and Croatia with possession based teams and be good at it. I have watched Ferguson & McLean play in Top-5 Leagues and show for the ball and dictate play. Is this a lack of clarity, lack of coached "Style" or individual errors or a mixture of both?!

Pressing, transitions and goals in Canada! After the hiring of Jesse Marsch this week by Canada Soccer , there has been lots of talk about pressing and transitions in the football community. This is THE style of play that we have used for the last 5 years with Alliance United FC in @L1OMens and will give you some insight in how this can look. We went away from the 'possession' based 1-4-3-3 that everyone has been using as the 'best way' to develop players and win games. Many say this is the 'right way' of playing. However, we use the players' abilities and inabilities as the starting point and based on players produced in Canada, within our youth system, this is the way we think will get us the best results and help our players get to the next level. You need to understand youth development in our country to understand what is and what is not being taught to young players. This is not a negative outlook, it is just looking at the reality. Many mistake this style of play as just non-stop pressing and chaos. Yes, these two aspects are important but it is a much more deliberate and planned way of playing that is used to predict where the opposition will play the ball, where the ball can be dictated and what areas the opposition leave open for transitions when they attack. In 2019, I was introduced to Ernst Tanner former Academy Director of Red Bull Salzburg and current Philadelphia Union Sporting Director that has led the club to being one of the top clubs in MLS and arguably the best academies in North America the last few years. Both organisations are known for their pressing and fast transitions in addition to producing top players. He became a mentor to me and gave me insights and education on this style of play. He has changed the way I look at football. Every season we try to recruit players that can play this style that I will describe below and we do not waiver in the way we played. Every game since 2019 Alliance United FC have played either in a 1-4-2-2-2 or a 1-4-4-2 midfield diamond....every game. We have no secrets in how we play. We focus on defending, pressing, forcing teams into mistakes and transition football. It is important to understand that we do not care how much possession we have and we actually want the opposition to have the ball most of the time. Stats in football show that only when a team has the ball 70% or more in a match their is a correlation to winning. Anything less is not correlated to winning in a certain match. In addition, 80% of goals are scored under 5 passes or less and under 10 seconds when regaining possession. We follow the trend! So, here are some important points based on the video: a) Pressing higher up the pitch when possible. All 11 players are committed to the team intention (principles) and if anybody is not committed and does not contribute to this style of play, they do not play. There is no leeway on this. Either you are in 100% in or you are not. All it takes is one player to not commit and the plan will not work. If we do not win the ball on the high press, everyone is to drop behind the ball as fast as possible to restart the press closer to our goal. b) Based on the opponent's scouting we press certain players and decide if will press closer to the sideline and 'pin' the player to the sideline or we dictate the passes and dribbles centrally and 'surround' the player to win the ball in central positions. We also decide if we will sometimes drop lower for the opposition to advance so we can play behind them when winning the ball. This is done if we scout that the opposition centre-backs are slower than our two strikers. This means we will 'outrun' them in the space they leave behind. c) When winning the ball we want to exploit space behind their backline as the priority which means that a player(s) need to be passing options behind the backline and preferably centrally which is closer to the goal, players winning the ball has to look to play the ball to the player furthest up the pitch. Possession is not a priority but scoring goals as fast as possible is. d) When winning the ball we stay as central as possible with passes and dribbling. We use the width of the penalty area (44 yards) as the preferable dimension when transitioning. We want to stay within this width. The wider the team plays the ball, the more time the opposition has to block the middle. PLAY AS VERTICALLY AS POSSIBLE! The emphasis is to get the ball to the two strikers and play 1v1 against the CBs. e) We know that most youth players grow up playing against a 1-4-3-3 which means there is one central striker meaning the centre-backs one back press and one can cover. Against 2 strikers this is not possible and many centre-backs do not have the ability to play 1v1 with space behind them. They are not taught the cues to step and press or drop to protect space behind them. They are never taught at youth level. We exploit this deficiency. e) All 11 players must get up the pitch to close the spaces if we lose the ball from our attacking transition so the opposition cannot transition against us and we can counter-press. f) A goal is the best outcome based on the objective of attacking but at the minimum we want to get a shot on goal from a transition. This is a quick overview of a different way of playing football that Canada will see with the Men's National Team.

The offense has to make 10 passes in a row to win the game. Coaches can change the space the players operate in, adjust the number of players in the game, and even combine their principles of play into it. For example, you could apply “zero-second decisions,” where players must pass immediately upon catching it, or it’s a turnover.

Motherwell In Possession I've been so impressed by Motherwell's performance and style this season. After watching back their 5-0 win from Saturday, I noticed a few key themes/principles of their play in possession: • Principle 1 - attackers occupy the spaces between FBs & CBs. This keeps opposition FBs pinned back and allows for moments to exploit opposition miscommunication. • Principle 2 - the "tapered box" in deep build-up: 2 CBs with wide positioning; 2 CMs with narrow positioning. Allows M'Well to comfortably progress the ball forward using diagonal & bounce passes. Attracts pressure from St Mirren, creating lots of space between defence & midfield to exploit. • Principle 3 - the use of 1-touch play to change the tempo. 1-touch passing disoriented St Mirren at times and didn't allow them to get appropriate pressure on the ball. It was also evident, especially on the left, that only 1 player needs to hold width (Longelo), Slattery was given a licence to roam inside and create overloads in the midfield, making it difficult for the St Mirren midfield. I genuinely believe if they had a proper goalscorer in the 1st part of the season M'well would have been top of the league as they have consistently been the best side.

Obviously, great players are gonna dominate the ball sometimes, but the game is designed to play together and as a team against the other team. When the ball is moving, it's the most fun for everybody." People of Nabi Ball!❤️✌🏾 There is progress in this team👏🏾 The patterns need time to develop and for the team to be consistent in them. ■ The left side looked better with Mmodi and Shinga✅️ ■ We needed Duba to attack the box and be available more when these 2 attacked on the left. He dropped to the edge of the box very often. ■ Unlike in the 1st half, there was a better understanding between Shinga and the LW. When Shinga overlapped, Mmodi was willing to occupy the pockets and combine. ▪︎ When Shinga inverted, Mmodi was happy to hug the line and take his man on. This understanding was key in that side coming to life in the 2nd half. ■ What was also impressive was the ability for them to create good combinations and movements with Mdu and Duba on the offense from the left side. ■ Lilepo from the right was getting into good goal scoring positions when the left was creating in the 2nd half, but poor decisions on the ball and slow reactions were a problem. He should compete on the LW with Mmodi. ■ In the 1st half, it was Monyane and Vilakazi on the right, and 2nd half it was Mmodi and Shinga with some of our best moments in attack. Overall, you can see the general attitude of this team changing. They want to play now. They want to stay on the ball and create chances from a position of control, not rely heavily on transitional moments to create chances. We have shown signs that we can control and be patient, but when opportunities to attack comes we are relentless, and we use a lot of speed to enter the final 3rd. We just need to work on the combinations and finishing in the final 3rd. Like I said before, we are a work in progress, and we will get better only if we build on the positives and remove the negatives. Protagonist Tiki-taka is coming!❤️✌🏾

#Seungmin on As We Are 🥺🤍 🐶 the song As We Are is a song about the journey that led me to be standing on this dominATE stage now, which being put in one single song. Everyone goes through difficult times, everyone has their own breakthrough phase, same goes to me, as well as you who are listening to this song, we are not all that different, like no matter what happens, slowly, lets get through it together and that's the hopeful content along with the comfort which I tried to put into the song. Usually, when the image of cliff crosses our mind, we would think about the pre-falling moment or maybe something very precarious , so for the first verse lyrics, i mentioned about wanting to potray the struggles to get through things , just right before falling and it connected well with cliff. I think it was a part where the stage set expressed the vulnerability of me very well. I am so so thankful of the video PD as they managed to perfectly express the vibes of the song , the meaning of what i wanted to say through the lyrics & the overall story structure with the background visuals (back source) , hence i was able to pour all my despair into singing at first then later when the clouds and the panorama unfolded, it gave me even more strength to sing. 🐶i have shown the sides of me playing guitar from time to time since in the past, though my skill was a bit clumsy , but for this tour, i made up my mind that i would definitely play a guitar while singing so i traveled far away to seek a guitar myself , and i really went through a lot of trial and error as well as the preparation along the way, Its really beyond my expectation how there were so many people that helped me out and through their help, it seems like the stage became a meaningful & deep one It feels like i gained another ability.

This is probably my stopping point right here, as I've been working on this for the last four to five hours, and the costs of spending more time on this are outweighing the benefits. The issue I'm running into now is that it doesn't seem to be agentic enough to be able to do stuff on its own that is meaningful, such as build apps generatively and take my feedback. I do think that the technology has a lot of promise, so I will check back in a couple weeks or months to try and pick up where I left off.
