Both terminals stayed fully operational under thick snow cover, with the built-in heaters clearing the accumulation in roughly 2 hours and 10 minutes at -10°C. Day 3 of the major snowstorm at Donner Summit. Periods of heavy snow continue, albeit less intense than yesterday. Cars are completely buried, and a rapid dig-out has begun before another 2–3 feet of snow falls tomorrow. Expect the highway to close again, so I’ve ended my snow chase and driven back down into the Central Valley. Yesterday’s conditions were the fiercest winter storm conditions I have ever covered or been a part of. We left the summit around 12:30 pm, as blizzard conditions persisted for hours. It was a complete whiteout, with no visibility beyond a couple hundred feet at any point. Even my chasing partner Michael’s car with 4WD, snow-studded tires and high clearance was absolutely no match for the storm. Visibility reached truly zero at times, and peak snow rates reached 4–5 inches per hour. Even though winds were lighter than in other I-80 blizzards, the extremely low-density snow made it incredibly easy to blow around. I chased the 10-foot blizzard during Leap Day 2024, several major storms during the winter of 2023, and experienced epic months like February 2019, December 2021, and January 2017, but the peak intensity of this storm puts it above the storm conditions I experienced during these events. Prayers go out to the victims and families of those who perished in yesterday’s avalanche near Frog Lake. A terrible tragedy.

***SIGNIFICANT SNOW EVENT FRIDAY*** 2ND CALL UPDATED MAP TO INCLUDE 10"+ TOTALS Merry Christmas everyone! I've had some time to review the new data and the storm is basically behaving just as I initially thought. There are a few revisions to my 1st call from yesterday morning to account for HIGHER SNOW RATIOS over NW NJ/Hudson Valley and to move the 6-10" zone into NYC. ZONE 1 – 6–10" OF SNOW This is the zone where cold air damming will be most prevalent, allowing snow to remain all snow for the duration of the event. Expect higher snow ratios, which could allow many areas to push toward double-digit totals, especially under any persistent banding. The pink area of 10"+ accounts for a MUCH higher snow ratio at the start and duration of the storm. This will allow for higher elevations to see many locations pick up 10"+ ZONE 2 – 4–6" OF SNOW This zone will likely start with heavy, wet snow, before transitioning to a lighter, fluffier snowfall as colder air works in. Some compaction is expected with lower snow ratios at times, but additional snow and mesoscale banding could still drive totals toward or above 6" in spots. ZONE 3 – 2–4" WITH MIXING This zone remains VERY uncertain. Everything south of 195 in NJ has a high chance to flip to heavy sleet and rain during convective bandings. I could make a strong argument that cold air advection dominates a tad longer creating an over performer, keeping this mostly snow with sleet mixed in and allowing totals to reach 4–6". However, low-level warm air transport on an easterly wind may introduce sleet, especially along the Jersey Shore (east of GSP) would eat into accumulations. I’ll be watching trends closely as this is shaping up to be a sharp cutoff storm where small shifts could have big impacts.

The countless stranded commuters and drivers at Navyug Tunnel last evening included one of my friends travelling with his family from Jammu to Srinagar. His wife has recently gone through surgery. When he and she began feeling claustrophobic and suffocating with the fuel emissions, they left their vehicle and driver in the middle of the 10-km long tunnel and started walking. They treaded a distance of 5 km in two hours and came out of the tube. 30 minutes later one snow clearance machine reached the tunnel end from Qazigund side. By that time, hundreds of vehicles had got stranded and it was snowing heavily. There were no shelter houses or hotels around. Thereafter, they were lucky enough to contact a family friend in a village further 2 km away in the Verinag direction. Finally after walking a distance of 7 km for 3-4 hours, they took shelter in their friend's house. There can be valid questions on the lack of preparedness by the authorities as the snowfall had been duly predicted by the metrology offices. However, this is also a fact that Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Sayeed Fakhruddin was himself around the spot with some evacuation and ambulance support. He made a video call to me around 12:41 a.m and I saw how the officials were clearing the highway for the Srinagar and Jammu-bound traffic.

They treaded a distance of 5 km in two hours and came out of the tube. 30 minutes later one snow clearance machine reached the tunnel end from Qazigund side. By that time, hundreds of vehicles had got stranded and it was snowing heavily. There were no shelter houses or hotels around. Thereafter, they were lucky enough to contact a family friend in a village further 2 km away in the Verinag direction. Finally after walking a distance of 7 km for 3-4 hours, they took shelter in their friend's house. There can be valid questions on the lack of preparedness by the authorities as the snowfall had been duly predicted by the metrology offices. However, this is also a fact that Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Sayeed Fakhruddin was himself around the spot with some evacuation and ambulance support. After my interaction with Trekkers: This is what I have gathered from discussion with the group in Dehradun- On the June 3, two trekkers exited the main group and continued forward. They were unaffected by the incident. June 3 morning group of 20 trekkers and guides went from Lambtal camp site to Sahsratal. They were returning to camp. When they were about one and half to two hours away from camp, at 2 pm snowing commenced. By 4 pm, snow intensified into blizzard. By 6 pm 2 trekkers succumbed to bad weather. Snow and wind made movement impossible. Visibility dropped to nil. They huddled together for the night on the route. Some more succumbed in the night. Morning of June 4 a guide set off to reach a place where mobile connectivity can be established. In the mean time some of the trekkers who were in a condition to move, started towards the camp around 11 am. The guides came down to the camp and went back with supplies for the stranded trekkers. June 4 evening a guide managed reach a point where phone signal was available and intimated about the situation. Karnataka Mountaineering Association and Indian Mountaineering Federation alerted agencies. Governments of Karnataka and Uttarakhand together initiated preparations June 4 night. Army, Airforce, SDRF and various government agencies and organisation were ready at 5 am June 5 to start the rescue efforts. #Uttarakhand #Trekking

Sustained efforts are being undertaken to address these concerns through adoption of global best practices and advanced technologies. ▪️Key initiatives include signing of MoUs with THDCIL for specialized landslide treatment in Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh, DGRE for geo-hazard mitigation, and GSI for geological investigations and data sharing for tunnel and corridor projects. Collaboration with NIRM focuses on geotechnical investigation scrutiny, design validation, tunnel safety audits, instrumentation monitoring and capacity building. ▪️A policy decision has been taken to prioritize slope cutting and stabilization prior to commencement of road works in hilly terrain, ensuring long-term safety and durability. Additionally, IIT Roorkee is being supported for development of guidelines on hillslope instability using real-time monitoring systems.
