The Tamil Nadu Fishnet Initiative is tackling plastic pollution on ground with the local community. At the Kasimedu Fishing Harbour in Chennai, a pilot project has established a discarded fishnet collection center, where fisherfolk are paid 40 Rs per kg for bringing discarded plastic and nylon nets. So far, the center has collected 12,984 kg of discarded nets, with 5.20 Lakh paid to the fishing community by the recycler. Of this, 10,710 kg has already been recycled into reusable plastic granules, transforming waste into wealth.
