Serenget is always the last to finish her milk. She is one of the younger orphans at our Voi Reintegration Unit in Tsavo and she has her own way of doing things. Rather than gulping from the bottle like the others, she takes it slowly – the Keepers fill the very tip of her trunk with milk, so she can pour every drop carefully into her mouth at her own pace. Two bottles takes her a good while. Every orphan drinks up to 24 litres a day, at whatever pace suits them. A gift of milk from our Wish List can help feed an orphan like Serenget:

Kamili and the other Nursery nannies have been marvellous with Kipekee, teaching her life skills (like browsing!) and making sure she feels safe and supported. The newest addition to our foster programme, Kipekee was rescued in June; she lost her mother to human-wildlife conflict. It’s no different with our orphan herd — nanny Nyambeni is far from full-grown, but she lovingly shields tiny Kipekee to the very best of her abilities! Kipekee is the latest addition to our foster programme. Rescued in June, this tiny orphan lost her mother to human-wildlife conflict. She arrived at the Nursery in very rough shape, and it has taken round-the-clock care to nurse her back to health. It has only been two months, but she has already made enormous progress! Milk dependency in the orphaned elephants doesn't end at three, or four, or even five. Losoito is five years old at our Voi Reintegration Unit and still on bottles – up to 24 litres of specially formulated milk a day, fed every three hours, day and night. Keeper Walter has been with her for nearly every feed. Why? Well, bottles of milk serve several purposes beyond providing nutrients; they also offer comfort and time to bond with their caregivers. Despite being fortified, the formula we give can also never be considered a 100% perfect match. So we tend to find orphans remain milk dependent for longer than they might in the wild, taking advantage of the comfort bottles bring. This works to their benefit too, enabling a very gradual reintegration with plenty of time to learn the social and survival skills they need to thrive in the wild. With more than 100 orphans in our care, your donations can help to fund these hugs in a bottle:

Busara is a little possessive of her bottle - and understandably so! Milk nearly drained, she's not leaving the last dregs to chance, protectively carting her bottle a short distance away from any potential interlopers! She's an orphan of drought &, as you can see, is still very much dependent on hand-delivered feeds of formula milk to ensure she grows strong & healthy.
