So, who here is old enough to remember this classic which turns 40 this year? Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a 1986 Sega Master System platformer. On planet Aries, you play as Alex Kidd, descend Mt. Eternal, and learn that the evil Janken the Great has conquered Radaxian, kidnapped Prince Egle (Alex's brother), and Princess Lora. And there you have it, your typical 80s hero story :) As the lost prince and son of King Thunder, you jump, punch, and quest through various stages, fight monsters and bosses, and take on Janken's henchmen (Rockhead, Paperhead, Scissorhead) in rock-paper-scissors duels. It's a typical platformer, and while not as good as Mario Bros., I always felt Alex Kidd gets a bit too lost in the shuffle of 80s platformers. Isn't it about time we brought the Blue Blur back home to a Sega console?! Presenting Sonic Mania Plus... running on an actual physical Sega Dreamcast! While there's no audio yet, and the 3D effects and stages have yet to be hooked up, developer Michael Fadely, has done an INCREDIBLE job getting this title ported over so far! He worked some serious voodoo to get this game fitting into 16MB of RAM, and has even had to push against VRAM limitations, even with texture paletting being used, due to there just being so many goddamn sprites loaded at once. What you WILL notice here is that she's running at a perfect 60FPS with the DC barely even trying at all for the majority of the game! This is due to his work implementing a custom HW accelerated rendering back-end that directly uses our low-level PVR driver in KallistiOS, rather than the SW renderer used by most ports of the game. While he still has a long way to go, it's incredible how playable the game already is and just how damn good and at home it feels on the Sega Dreamcast!

From the same dark wizard, jnmartin84, who brought you Doom64 fully bump mapped at 60FPS on the console, comes the first official release of Wipeout DC, clocking in at a paltry 61-256FPS! This footage is a series of direct HW captures from me playing it on my DC (which is why the player is always in 8th place, lol). Holy CRAP! jnmartin gave me access to his private Sonic R decompilation repo, which will serve as the basis for the Sega Dreamcast port. I was able to build Sonic R NATIVELY for my x86_64 desktop, running Ubuntu 24.04, and immediately begin playing after just typing "make" and then passing the binary the location of my ripped (yet legally purchased) PC assets. ...but while he's at it, jnmartin has decided to make the base decompilation codebase platform-independent, so this should theoretically work on any platform that supports SDL2 and very basic OpenGL--no shaders required--with very low system requirements. jnmartin already has it running fine on the latest MacOS version on Apple silicon, and now we can confirm it works fine on Debian Linux distros, no problem. Next up we'll test for Windows. Oh, and by the way, to everyone freaking out over the fact that the decomp is starting from the PC version and not the Saturn version, lamenting the less vibrant coloring... Your voices have been heard! CHECK IT OUT NOW!!! ...just imagine 4p netplay between Windows, Mac, Linux, and the Sega Dreamcast! 🤯

I have something very special to share today! This is a hardware capture of maximqad's port of the Xash3D engine--which is compatible with the Half-Life engine--running on the Sega Dreamcast... ONLINE! Keep in mind this is EXTREMELY early in the days of the port, with no DC-specific graphics optimizations or hardware accelerated math routines yet, so performance still has a lot of room to drastically improve. Audio was literally just barely moved to the SPU for the first time just the other day too, so this is still all very incredibly new... ...but here it is! The engine that wouldn't even run without being on an emulator that also needed to emulate the extended 32MB RAM modification... now running on a stock Sega Dreamcast with online multiplayer connectivity and mouse and keyboard support! Fantastic work from maximqad! I really believe as this engine matures, it will be an incredibly powerful tool for Dreamcast developers and will potentially bring a lot of new software to the platform in the form of Half-Life engine mods!

FreakDave's original demo already impressed the hell out of me when I first saw it several years ago, getting back into DC development after a several-year hiatus... but this new demo is absolutely INCREDIBLE stuff. It's powered by FreakDave's FDV engine, and now features vertex-based ambient occlusion, light baking, approximated global illumination, fog, and crazy water effects in addition to the dynamic lighting of the original all running at higher FPS! ...and now I can brag about the fact that he's using my SH4ZAM linear algebra library for the DC's SH4 CPU to accelerate all of the math behind the effects! For years, maybe a decade, I've wanted to build a writing tool that just did a few things I couldn't find anywhere else. A system that mimicked how I think when I write. A system that provided clear affordances, features, and places to do the things I wanted to do. A way to play with my writing as I'm writing it. A way to settle into just the right way to say something. It never made sense to make it a 37signals product because it's not commercially viable, nor would it be worth pulling people off their other work to hack on this. Plus, it would have taken months the old way. So this weekend I just made it myself, with Claude's help. It's called Write_On and the short video walks you through it. Essentially it's "alternative control" at the word, sentence, and paragraph level, plus a way to dim stuff back, and stash stuff near by. Not version control, but alternative control. Just encountered the STRANGEST freaking "bug" in our port of Sonic Mania to the Sega Dreamcast while I was beta testing with my son... Witness as the game, which runs like an absolute dream on the Dreamcast, smooth as butter, without the SH4 CPU or PVR GPU even trying, abruptly slows down to a crawl the minute the anti-gravity electromagnets come onscreen. The game remains in slideshow mode all the way through until the end of Act 1, after which it jumps to 60FPS the INSTANT the act ends and Act 2 begins? WTF?! Turns out the minute the electromagnets become activated, they are checking for objects to interact with OVER THE ENTIRE MAP until the level ends... Just encountered the STRANGEST freaking "bug" in our port of Sonic Mania to the Sega Dreamcast while I was beta testing with my son... Witness as the game, which runs like an absolute dream on the Dreamcast, smooth as butter, without the SH4 CPU or PVR GPU even trying, abruptly slows down to a crawl the minute the anti-gravity electromagnets come onscreen. The game remains in slideshow mode all the way through until the end of Act 1, after which it jumps to 60FPS the INSTANT the act ends and Act 2 begins? WTF?! Turns out the minute the electromagnets become activated, they are checking for objects to interact with OVER THE ENTIRE MAP until the level ends... Have been digging deeper into the AI influencer studio from Higgsfield. If you're building AI tools you should take note here. It's so... easy. Bing bang boom 'influencer'. AI has an accessibility issue, not in a WCAG way, in a 'IDFK what to prompt' way. The character creation UI dropping right into Kling motion control... the prompt field is borderline hidden. This is all visual, I didn't type a single character. Normal people don't know how to prompt. If you're making generative AI tools for normal people to use - start with the training wheels before you show them the BMX track.

#SEONGHWA visited Teotihuacán in the morning before leaving Mexico! ⭐️: Now I… It's my last day in Mexico today. I'm going back home soon. Right now I'm feeling very tired, you know? This morning, for a bit, I went to see the… like a mountain here in Mexico. It's that, um, what was it? That massive, the, uh, what was the name? That.. oh, what was it? I can't remember. Anyway, I went to that really big place, and it was very healing. But it was so high up that my legs hurt a bit from the climb up? I heard that it's the world's third biggest pyramid so, this morning I went, and I also took lots of pictures. Ah that's right! Someone commented the place names here. Teotihuacán. Ah, yes, the name's really hard! So, I visited Teotihuacán and it was really… I was completely overwhelmed there and seeing it I really kind of felt like, you know, a bit inspired and also healed. The way it survived the marks of time without crumbling, that was seriously cool/ impressive. As for the pictures, I think I'll upload them once I'm back in Korea. I'll organise them a bit first. Yes.

$Two new #threejs projects on the way 😍 Working on my own gem renderer with a custom refraction material in TSL for #WebGPU, combining Screen Space Reflections + SSGTAO for superior results, as this allows diamonds to generate reflections on the metal mesh. The performance is incredible, even on gems with over 200 diamonds. This time, without any additional libraries. Just React Three Fiber and a lot of magic with custom shaders in TSL. GemGPU™ will also come with a very minimalist gem and metal customization panel that hides and lets the jewelry be the star. I also created a beautiful new stats panel that completely hides in the scene when not needed. It provides relevant optimization information, a performance gauge, summary and expanded modes, and day/night toggle. In the video, you can also see SSGI in action, with a pearl that reflects, in real time, all the objects in the scene, just as the objects in the scene reflect the pearl. It's magical.
