After 3 incredible years and 1.6M students later, my journey at ALX Africa has come to an end. It has been a life-changing experience, during which I made a lot of friends, worked with an incredibly dedicated team, and met so many talented students. A few numbers. We scaled from a few thousand students to 1.6M students on our platform. Students loved it and many of them took more than one course: 4M total! For the famous #ALX_SE Software engineering program, our SE students made an average of 2,000 commits and our checker reviewed 180M of their projects. That’s 2B lines of code… and that was before Claude Code. They actually wrote these themselves (unless Kimba said otherwise :) A big thank you to all my SE team mates, I am so proud of what we have accomplished, and I will really miss you all. Thank you to Fred for the trust he put in me and always supporting my crazy new and disruptive ideas. Thank you to my students. It was an honor to work with you, watch you struggle but relentlessly move forward, no matter what, until you got this job. To those who are still struggling finding this job, keep pushing forward. Don’t let go. You got this. You all have worked so hard and I am so proud of you. You are the greatest thing I've ever been part of and I can't wait to see what impact you will have on the world. It’s your turn to shine now, and hopefully for some of you to give back to the community whenever you are in a position to. I hope you’ll keep sharing the good news with me when you get this internship, this job, or when you launch your company. These messages are everything to me. In any case, I’ll be watching you from afar, and you can count on me to continue answering all your LinkedIn and X messages. Can’t conclude without ALX Africa’s signature: continue to “Do Hard Things”. Remember who you are, where you are coming from, and where you set out to go. I’ll see you there soon. With love. I cannot comprehend what happened today. I literally cannot wrap my brain around the fact that you’re no longer here. Your last text to me was on Friday night, making a joke about the student driver sticker on my car as my son learns to drive. I had no idea that would be our last laugh together. Matt was so much more than a coworker—he was a close friend for years. Back when I did traffic at WISH-TV, we were constantly texting, bonding over how much we hated getting up early, keeping up with the morning commutes, and building a friendship that only grew deeper over time. We talked about everything: our struggles, spirituality, fitness, and relationships. He became like a brother to me. I will forever cherish our late-night coffee meetups just to talk about life. Matt was actually the one who brought me to WIBC. He told me, “Johnette, these people are amazing and you have to come work here.” By the grace of God, it all worked out. I’ll never forget showing up on my first day and receiving the biggest hug from him. Or how I used to steal his protein bars 😂 Or how he’d be sore from working out, and I’d send him stretching videos because he was always complaining about his hips. When Matt came on my podcast, he was so open about his own struggles that it gave me the courage to share mine. Because of Matt, I found the strength to share my past journey with substance abuse publicly. Today reminded me that at Radio One, we are far more than just coworkers—we are a family. We cried, hugged, and grieved together for a man we all loved and adored. I haven’t been able to stop crying today, and I am still trying to process everything. But I know I’m not alone in this grief; so many of us are feeling the deep void he left behind. Matt, I love you. You will never be forgotten. Thank you for loving all of us so well and for never giving up. You ran the race, and now it’s our turn to carry the torch for you. Until we meet again, I will cherish every single moment we had together. You left a lasting impact on so many lives, and you finished well. 🖤 93 WIBC Indianapolis
