A father in Changamwe, Mombasa, is grappling with distress after his baby was kidnapped and despite the suspect being in police custody, the child’s whereabouts remain unknown. The suspect, identified as Daniel Kazungu, was arrested in connection with the abduction but has reportedly refused to disclose any information regarding the baby’s location. Even more troubling, he is said to be sending threats to the father, warning that he intends to kidnap his elder son. The case is currently before the court and is scheduled to continue on 4th April 2025. However, the father has expressed frustration over what he describes as a lack of cooperation from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Sources close to the matter claim that investigators have not taken the necessary steps to locate the missing child, leaving the family in anguish. Growing Concerns Over Delayed Action The father, desperate for answers, is now considering taking his plea to social media in the hope that public pressure will push authorities to act with urgency. He believes that amplifying the case online could force government agencies to prioritise the investigation and ensure justice is served. With Kazungu in custody but unwilling to provide information, questions have emerged over whether law enforcement has done enough to extract crucial details that could lead to the baby’s recovery. The silence surrounding the case has only heightened fears that critical time is being lost. As the days go by, the father remains hopeful that his child will be found.

Speaking in the Chamber today on the Official Secrets Act, I raised deep concern over the decision to drop charges against two individuals accused of espionage for China. As someone sanctioned and targeted by the Chinese Government, I was briefed at the outset that this was a “slam-dunk” prosecution — they were clear that they had met every single requirement within the Official Secrets Act about passing secure information to the Chinese intelligence agency that would be “directly or indirectly" useful to the Chinese state. That is very clear. It cannot, therefore, be for a lack of evidence that this has been dropped by the CPS, so why has the case been abandoned? The issue lies in how the Act defines an “enemy”. After the China audit, the Labour Government had the chance to put China in the same upper tier as Russia, North Korea and Iran — but chose not to. Ministers call China a “challenge”, not a threat. That position is indefensible. The Minister speaks of threats, but he does not say that China is a threat; he says it is a “challenge”, which is a ludicrous position to take. This decision has let down Parliament and, indeed, Mr Speaker himself, who stood up for Members targeted by Beijing. Until China is recognised for what it is — a persistent threat to individuals and states — our national security will remain compromised, and our reputation weakened as a strong state against terrorism.
