People are under cost of living pressure, we recognise that and we're doing something about it with more cost of living help like income tax cuts and halving the fuel excise. It's great to see local businesses doing what they can to support their workers and customers during tough times. Thanks to Michael and the team at Bunnings Warehouse Preston for meeting with Ged Kearney and me this week. Really busy end to the week consulting with CEOs and workers in fuel, supermarkets, technology, logistics, mining, banking and building supplies sectors about the fallout from conflict in the Middle East.

The US Administration has been extremely generous over many years, and it is within its rights to decide what it supports, and to what extent. But the abrupt cuts in funding from the US are putting at risk decades of progress in various health programmes across the world. We ask the US to engage in dialogue with affected countries so plans can be made to transition to more sustainable solutions, without disruptions that cost lives. We call on other donors and the countries that have relied on US financing to step up -- to the extent they can.

The conventional wisdom is that American manufacturing cannot compete on cost as our labor is too expensive. A factory worker in Ohio will never be as cheap as one in Shenzhen. Bryon Hargis (Bryon Hargis) thinks this misses the point entirely. "In aerospace, the thing that costs money is everybody's time," he said. Cut the time, and the cost follows. Not by paying workers less, but by designing systems that need less labor to build: fewer steps, higher yield, parts that can only go together one correct way. The problem is that America has spent decades doing the opposite. Its development process is so labor-intensive that it is approaching the limit of what it can afford to build at all.

We need a government with the courage to tax that wealth and invest it in what we actually need: Housing. Healthcare. Education. Infrastructure. Good-paying, unionized jobs. That’s how we build a strong, independent economy that can stand up to Trump and work for all of us.
