My eldest child was a very early talker. Sentences at 12 mos. So, not much older than this, but equally self assured. She’d make a statement, then say, “DAT’s what I say, uh huh uh huh, dat’s what I SINK!!” (I then realized, I do that, where she learned it!)

We often see this with vocalizations, but as this fantastic video from brittdipp on TT shows us, this mimicry isn’t limited to speech. Watch as this little one works to mirror his father’s spider-like hand gesture in which he walks his fingers across the table to engage his son. One of the things this video illustrates particularly well is the importance of wait time. This is a complex task for our hero and his “return” is far from instantaneous. It requires real concentration. And you can see his mental gears turning! Watch how carefully he observes his own hand, initially managing to slide it back toward dad with mostly a closed fist. ziyu about his two sons🐈🐈 🐟: This time since it‘s a business trip I‘ve been checking my suveillance camera and I saw (inaudible) and Little Eleven was super happy. He‘s just first eating his own food, then after two bites he goes snatch Dayu‘s food. Both bowls he eats a bit and then Dayu can only sit at the side and feel wronged. 🐟: Bur actually Dayu hasn‘t been good either. Because the drinking bowl as my home is more like the automatic kind, like a fountain, you know? Then everytime Dayu walks by it seems like he wants to use it but also doesn‘t at the same time so he would just take his little paw and play around. As young children work to master new skills, their success is almost always enabled by external supports (from both people and things) that allow them to accomplish just a little more in combination than they could on their own. We call this scaffolding - and this video, shared to IG by rachaelmackenziee - is a treasure trove of examples. Let’s start with the obvious. Our hero is right on the cusp of descending the stairs independently… but he’s not quite there. With the help of the staircase railing (which act like a set of training wheels), he slowly but surely makes the trip successfully. An even more interesting example comes when he spots something on the stair: A crumb. While it’s not clear exactly what this crumb is, what is clear is that he REALLY wants to check it out. Mom, however, advises that it’s yucky and not for him. Watch how her language becomes the tool baby uses to overcome his urge to touch it. His eyes remain drawn to it, but he resists the urge to touch it. “Bye crumb!” he announces. Even as he passes, he continues to look back at it. But now it’s game time. He’s approaching the bottom of the stairs and needs to focus on his footing. He repeats mom’s urging to keep coming (“chop chop”) and then scaffolds HIMSELF with private pep talk. “COME ON FREDDIE!” As he makes it to the penultimate step, his attention shifts once more… back to that sweet, sweet crumb. Again we have a window on his thinking as he uses private speech to remind himself… “Oh, it’s a crumb. It’s go away.” So amazing to watch how his successful journey is scaffolded by at least three different types of support - one physical (the railing), one external (mom’s guidance), and one internal (his private speech). I only wish this video had gone another 3 seconds. As it ends Freddie has reached both the final step and the end of the railing - presenting one last challenge. Because it ends where it does, my strong suspicion is that Mom stops filming to provide one last scaffold - extending the hand Freddie needs to make it down safely. Such a cool little vignette.

Infants are the world’s most accomplished language learners. As the process unfolds, children pass through stages of progressively more complex “babbling” before they begin using conventional words. But babbling isn’t limited to spoken language. Deaf children and the children of deaf parents pass through similar stages as they approximate the use of sign language - which brings us to this video, shared to IG by oursignedworld. Watch how locked in this little guy is as he “speaks” with his deaf father, observing dad’s sign language and then “babbling” back with his arms and hands. In time he will become both an accomplished signer and speaker. What a lovely example of language acquisition in process.

Serve and fetch! I’ve written often about the importance of responsive “serve and return” interactions between infants and their parents… but I’m yet to see one quite like this. Watch this little one’s face as Sloan (a very good boy 🐾) inserts himself into what is intended as a back and forth between he and (in this case) his grandma. Perhaps because he’s never met a talking dog, our hero seems rightfully content to let his four legged friend take the lead… or maybe it’s just that he can’t get a word in edgewise? Regardless, doesn’t Sloan do an amazing job of saying “mama” a couple times here? Hilarious. Happy New Year! This amazing duo was shared to IG by tammypillette.

This man man had bought his son an iPad for Christmas. One day while visiting his son tells him that his brother keeps taking his iPad and doesn’t let him use it. The man was upset and he knows even though the other child isn’t his, he feels like he needs to speak up and set an example. He works hard to support his child and he provides for him very well. He doesn’t feel bad that the other kid’s in the house’s father’s don’t do anything for their kids, it’s not his concern. Is he wrong for talking to the other child like this, is he just looking out for his own kid, or is he being selfish and should have a little compassion because it’s not the other child’s fault their father isn’t providing for them as he should?

Sit and spin! Yesterday we talked about the development of crawling. But I’m just as fascinated by the complex array of motor and cognitive skills on display here as this little one mimics his spinning toy giraffe. Watch how he manages to coordinate use of his arms and legs to revolve just as the toy does… using his heels to push off into the same counter clockwise spin and his arms to build and maintain momentum. But it not just that he can revolve. He manages to: - roughly approximate the speed of the toy’s rotation - visually track the giraffe, using its cues to start and stop his movement on demand, as if playing a game of “red light, green light” - time his singing to match the periods of rotation. This story is HORRIBLE. A father in Texas heard the screams of his little girl coming from a barn on his property. He then walks in on a ranch hand sexually assaulting his 5 year old daughter. He then pummeled that ranch hand until he no longer moved. A grand jury declined to prosecute! I say this isn’t vigilantism. It’s just a father being a FATHER!!!

Trump raised millions of dollars to knock out his own party members - just because they disagreed with him on a handful of issues. All that proves is that he can manhandle his own teammates. Unfortunately: at the same time, he’s proving that he CANNOT manhandle inflation. He CANNOT manhandle these gas prices. And he CANNOT manhandle Iran. So he can feel better about himself for punching down inside his own party. But it’s not good for our economy — or our democracy— to have a president who is more obsessed with PAYBACK for himself than PROSPERITY for the rest us.
