Last night, Patriots performed well, successfully intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. Yet we still need considerably more forces, systems, and compatible missiles to protect lives. This week, the Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway – along with our Baltic friends, decided to commit an additional $500 million to the... PURL initiative, which will be a substantial help. We are also working on deliveries of other advanced air defense systems and strengthening our aviation – a major deal with France is in preparation and will be finalized soon – a historic agreement. We are setting up a deal with Greece as well – on energy to maximize options for gas supplies to Ukraine, both for this winter and strategically for the long term. We are also working with Germany on an additional IRIS-T, another powerful air defense system, as well as missiles for our existing systems. We have also received missiles for NASAMS made by Norway. However, even domestic Norwegian stocks weren’t enough. And then Norway worked with other countries at the political level to provide us with some additional missiles. This was very important. In parallel, we were working on joint production and IRIS-T systems. And then it was like a rising wave: when one country stepped up, other real allies, like Norway, followed. That was very good. This winter, Norway also helped us with gas which we needed after Russian attacks on our energy sector, including gas infrastructure. And the people of Norway support these decisions. Our meeting today with Emmanuel Macron strengthens our defense with effective, practical, and powerful elements. Agreements have been prepared – and the relevant documents are being signed today – to significantly boost our defense capabilities. Ukraine will be able to receive 100 Rafale F4 aircraft, very advanced French radars, 8 SAMP-T air defense systems with 6 launchers each, the missiles and guided bombs necessary for our defense. Our meeting today with Emmanuel Macron strengthens our defense with effective, practical, and powerful elements. Agreements have been prepared – and the relevant documents are being signed today – to significantly boost our defense capabilities. Ukraine will be able to receive 100 Rafale F4 aircraft, very advanced French radars, 8 SAMP-T air defense systems with 6 launchers each, the missiles and guided bombs necessary for our defense. This is a strategic agreement that will remain in effect for 10 years, starting next year. This is a historic deal. Today, together with the President of France, we met with representatives of defense companies. We outlined the direction of technological cooperation, namely: we will work together to increase the industrial and technological potential of Ukraine and France. We also have another important agreement today for the purchase of 55 new electric locomotives from France – a deal between Ukrainian Railways and France’s ALSTOM – and we are committed to carrying on with this line of cooperation with France. Over this past week, Russia used around 2,200 attack drones against Ukraine, more than 1,730 guided aerial bombs, and 106 missiles of various types, nearly half of them ballistic. Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, as well as our border and frontline communities, are under fire almost every day. There was a massive strike on Kyiv that claimed the lives of 31 people and injured another 102, including four children. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Every day, we must protect lives from these attacks. We are also strengthening our air defense through joint work with Europeans on anti-ballistic capabilities. We need answers from our partners to our requests for air defense.
