Why do people often get the wrong impression of us? Today’s guest believes it’s because most of us have no idea how we’re actually coming across. Alison Wood Brooks is a professor at Harvard Business School who studies conversation and emotion. Her research focuses on everyday communication and the subtle ways our words shape how people respond. Alison’s work shows that there’s often a gap between what we intend to communicate and what people actually hear. That gap influences how confident we seem and how likeable we come across.

Earlier this week at GTC, we announced our partnership with Nvidia. We will work with Nvidia to build strong, American open-source models that are at the frontier of scientific reasoning. These models will be essential for the US to compete with China on science in the coming decades. Jensen is committing to spend tens of billions of dollars developing open-source models, and we are excited to be a partner with them in figuring out how to benchmark, train and use those agents to accelerate scientific research. We have already open-sourced some of the work we have done with them, and are looking forward to open-sourcing more. There are few things today that are more important. There should be no thing as a banned book. In fact, the more controversial a book, the more open we should be to reading it. We should always have our mind open. We shouldn’t hide from offensive or even stupid ideas—we should try to understand them, to see how the enemy thinks, as Seneca said. You can’t learn what you think you already know, Epictetus said. How can you get better, smarter, more wise if you only read books that you agree with, that stay within your comfort zone? Read widely. Read dangerously. Read courageously.

I have never called a contractor to do work on my home who isn’t Black. Why? Because if we aren’t intentional about investing in Black businesses they don’t succeed and can’t scale. We change that when we invest our money through supporting the business. Each year I keep a track of how much I’ve spent with Black businesses and people. We should all look at how much we #BuyBlack so we can grow our own individual impact in our community. Black businesses supply Black jobs which help make our communities stable, resourced, and safe. It’s Black business month, #BuyBlack and do your part to help build a stronger Black ecosystem.
