We live in Kuwadzana Phase 3, around the shops at Bolo, and we are struggling with noise from bars in the area. There are about seven bars within a small 300-square-metre area, with some located upstairs. They often stay open until around 3am, playing loud music and making so much noise that residents cannot sleep. Some customers also use vulgar language, which our children can hear. We have tried speaking to the bar owners and asked them to lower the volume, especially after 10pm, but they refused and told us to report them wherever we wanted. We have reported the noise to the City of Harare, signed a petition as residents, and contacted our councillor and the council district officer, but we have not received any help. Police sometimes come to the bars and take bribes and leave without taking action. We understand that these businesses need to operate, but we are simply asking for reasonable noise levels at night so that residents can sleep. Just imagine a club located directly opposite a residential area in Kangundo Road that is not soundproofed. People in our city are suffering from noise pollution. They have been served with notices, but there has been no compliance. Some of these establishments have even obtained court orders to prevent us from closing them down, making our work difficult. I call upon city residents to boycott those operating illegally in residential areas. We will not sit idly by while residents endure this. I am calling on all bar owners to strictly prohibit the admission of minors into their premises and to relocate their establishments away from residential areas, as their continued operation in such locations not only contributes to noise pollution but also erodes the moral fabric of our society.
