There are a lot of myths about Alberta’s oil sands. One of the biggest is that once mining is complete, the land is simply abandoned. Suncor’s mobile reclamation exhibit offered a fascinating look at how reclaimed mine sites are being transformed into forests, wetlands, lakes, and wildlife habitat. It also highlighted something many people don’t realize: the majority of the water used in Suncor’s mining operations is continually recycled and reused, with new technologies being developed to safely treat water and return it to the environment as reclamation progresses. Alberta continues to prove that responsible energy development and environmental innovation go hand in hand.

Under this initiative: 🔹10 overhead reservoirs and 138 water centers are being established in Bahawalpur. 🔹12 overhead reservoirs and 256 water centers are being established in Rahim Yar Khan. 🔹7 overhead reservoirs and 100 water centers are being established in Rajanpur. The project, which began in March 2026, is scheduled for completion by September 2026. Once completed, these 29 reservoirs and 494 water centers will treat saline groundwater through modern filtration plants and supply clean drinking water directly to people's homes. InshaAllah!

It just took one bad rainy season for Bengaluru to face a massive water shortage crisis. Given that extreme weather conditions will only become more common, this probably won't be the last time we face this crisis. I learned recently that wastewater could be part of the solution. Bengaluru's total freshwater demand is ~2632 (million litres a day) MLD, and it generates ~2000 MLD of wastewater. Of this, centralized sewage treatment plants treat ~1,300 MLD, and this water is used for agricultural purposes. About 3,500 apartments and commercial establishments have decentralized sewage treatment plants (STPs) and waste ~80% of their excess STP water. This STP water is low quality and mostly unusable beyond flushing and gardening. If this excess STP water can be converted to high-quality water, about 450–500 MLD of water demand could be met by decentralized treatment plans. Boson White Water is one startup we met that is trying to solve the problem of converting STP water to potable water.

"Tirunelveli Corporation has constructed a new DEWATS (Decentralised Wastewater Treatment System) inside #Thamirabarani river to clean sewage. I am sending a can of water taken from the location where the so-called 'cleaned' water is discharged into the river. Is any corporation staff ready to drink it?" asked S P Muthuraman, who has been fighting to #SaveThamirabarani for more than a decade. He alleged that the corporation had already constructed 10 useless DEWATS for Rs 33 lakhs inside the river, in violation of TNPCB rules, just to file a reply to his petition filed before NGT. "Now, to answer some government entities, it has constructed another useless DEWART system that will in no way work to #SaveThamirabarani,' he added.
