I knew I was missing something. Since I'm using the additive blending, I can use the alpha as the intensity instead to crank up the color into the whites at the center and fade out on the edges.

You are right, some people might be interested in the code. At some point I'll clean everything and put it online (very likely on Three.js examples). But while I'm learning, I'd rather focus on testing stuff with messy code.
