THE RUN Archie Karas drove into Las Vegas with $50 in his pocket. A little over two years later, he’d won so many of Binion’s $5,000 chips that Jack Binion asked him to sell some back so the casino would have enough in circulation. He’d already made and lost millions before 1992. In Vegas he borrowed $10,000 from a poker player he knew, sat down in a high-stakes Razz game, and walked out three hours later with $30,000. He paid back double and kept the rest. He found a pool hustler known only as Mr. X and they started at $5,000 a game. As Karas kept winning, the stakes climbed to $40,000 a game. He took $1.2 million off him at pool, then played him at poker and won another $3 million. Soon the biggest names in the game were sitting across from him — Stu Ungar, Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson, Johnny Moss, Puggy Pearson. He lost sessions to some of them, but the money kept moving his way more often than not. By the time the poker action dried up, his bankroll was in the tens of millions, and he turned to the dice tables. By early 1995, the man who’d arrived with $50 had roughly $40 million. He kept playing anyway, increasingly at craps and baccarat. Over about three weeks, he lost $11 million at craps, $2 million back to Reese, and another $17 million at baccarat. Thirty million dollars was gone. He left for Greece with roughly $12 million remaining, came back to Vegas, and kept going. Inside a month he was down to about $1 million. He won a million-dollar freezeout match and doubled himself back to $2 million, then took that money back to the tables and lost it too. Karas kept gambling for years afterward.
