Get a ride in a Tesla. It is very clear now that camera only approach is the right way to go. It isn't even an argument anymore. Even the Chinese are realizing that and going camera only.

in the interview, RJ said lidar is necessary while rivian catches up to tesla on the amount of data they have

@Scobleizer exactly right. (lidar better than camera in dark, rain and snow too. radar still best. regardless, camera alone not enough. always multi sensor. so long term: camera and radar)

@MatthewBerman Totally disagree. Camera works way better than you do. Way way way way better, in fact, at night. No need for other sensors. If you say you need other sensors than you must immediately stop driving at night.

@MatthewBerman i was talking in generalities (rivian needing it). tesla is different because of its vision neural net which no one can compete with (yet) due to over a billion miles training.)

Ahh, gotcha. Agreed. But I don't think LiDAR data really helps them as much as the LiDAR fans think it will. That said, Tesla did drive LiDAR cars around to get ground truth to help their system overlay all the camera data on top more accurately, so there is a place for LiDAR, just not in the vehicles themselves.

If you're asking such a absurd question, you have absolutely no idea about it.

Elon said in 2018, anyone using Gay-dar is doomed. The rest are only catching on now. 😂🌈

Here is a clue

Stupid question. Lidar is useless.

It has to be both in the snowy tundras of Minnesota.

tech ceos really think a bumper sensor matters more than the invention of fire lol. my wallet says the most important period is when these trucks actually become affordable for us. who actually buys this hyperbole?

Short term, e.g next 5 years, LiDAR probably wins safety/regulatory battles. In the long run though I think vision takes over on price if it proves safe at scale

Multi modal wins, the brain is multi sensory >> so any one modality is likely to be insufficient.

Vision

He’s describing Tesla.

Sensor fusion is a quick short cut to enhanced adas but will become obsolete vs pure vision intelligence.

The one with the best brain. The sensors are a moot point and just add cost to the unit economics

@smyyguy @EffortCapital

This explanation explains why cameras and neural nets is the solution.

Industrial robot? It’s cool! I think industrial data is also necessary
