In 1965 (some accounts say 1964), Jerry Jeff Walker, a musician was jailed for public intoxication in New Orleans during a police sweep. He shared a cell with a homeless street performer/dancer who called himself "Mr. Bojangles" (to hide his real identity from police). The man, a white tap dancer inspired by the famous Black entertainer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, told stories about his life and his dog that was killed by a car. When the mood in the cell grew somber, he lightened it by dancing.
