At 11:27 a.m., Charlotte Fire received multiple calls reporting a house fire in the 5800 block of Rupert Lane. Despite heavy snow on area roads, the first fire company arrived within five minutes, at 11:32 a.m., to find heavy fire and smoke showing from a two-story home. Multiple units were assigned, and firefighters immediately began fire suppression operations while working to evacuate the structure. Crews encountered significant fire conditions in the attic space. Through coordinated and determined efforts, firefighters brought the fire under control by 11:48 a.m. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. The Charlotte Fire Investigation Task Force determined the fire to be an accidental attic fire. Estimated property and contents loss is approximately $50,000. I've had some time to review the new data and the storm is basically behaving just as I initially thought. There are a few revisions to my 1st call from yesterday morning to account for HIGHER SNOW RATIOS over NW NJ/Hudson Valley and to move the 6-10" zone into NYC. ZONE 1 – 6–10" OF SNOW This is the zone where cold air damming will be most prevalent, allowing snow to remain all snow for the duration of the event. Expect higher snow ratios, which could allow many areas to push toward double-digit totals, especially under any persistent banding. The pink area of 10"+ accounts for a MUCH higher snow ratio at the start and duration of the storm. This will allow for higher elevations to see many locations pick up 10"+ ZONE 2 – 4–6" OF SNOW This zone will likely start with heavy, wet snow, before transitioning to a lighter, fluffier snowfall as colder air works in. Some compaction is expected with lower snow ratios at times, but additional snow and mesoscale banding could still drive totals toward or above 6" in spots. ZONE 3 – 2–4" WITH MIXING This zone remains VERY uncertain. Everything south of 195 in NJ has a high chance to flip to heavy sleet and rain during convective bandings. I could make a strong argument that cold air advection dominates a tad longer creating an over performer, keeping this mostly snow with sleet mixed in and allowing totals to reach 4–6". However, low-level warm air transport on an easterly wind may introduce sleet, especially along the Jersey Shore (east of GSP) would eat into accumulations. I’ll be watching trends closely as this is shaping up to be a sharp cutoff storm where small shifts could have big impacts.

Our snow plow crews have been working hard from Lake Tahoe to as low as Foresthill to keep our roads clear. Today, we were out at the Alta/Dutch Flat area capturing one of our Placer County snow plows in action! ❄️🚜 When the snow is cold, heavy and wet like it’s been this week, plowing can be especially challenging, and it can take multiple passes to fully clear the road. No matter the conditions, our crews are working around the clock to Keep Placer Moving. If you see them out there, give them plenty of space and a wave! 👋

The flood sirens have gone off in the Upper Valley this afternoon due to a combination of heavy rain and snow melt. I have spoken to the Environment Agency and Calderdale Council. Current predictions suggest it is likely to get worse until about 3:30 – 4:00pm and then ease. This is being monitored and I'll update as the day progresses. There is surface water flooding on Halifax Road at Eastwood where a crew are working to unblock drains, surface water flooding at Callis where the road is closed, and a flood warning in Walsden. Other areas including Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, and Todmorden are under flood alerts and teams are out clearing drains. Please avoid travelling to these areas. Residents should put up flood defences if possible. You can get flooding updates on or the Environment Agency website. Flood wardens also update on a number of local Facebook pages including Todmorden Flood Group and Hebden Bridge Flood Action Group. We are at the frontline of climate shocks here in Calder Valley. Rest assured I will continue to raise the issues we face with flooding at the highest levels of government.

I just left a briefing with important updates to share with you from the Executive on the ongoing snow emergency as we deal with freezing temperatures. While I appreciate the hard work of District workers, the government’s response has fallen far short of what DC residents deserve. I know many residents are understandably angry and disappointed over streets that still need to be cleared and sidewalks that are impassable. We need clear communication and better coordination. Here’s what you need to know: * New heavy equipment started being used last night for snow removal * Crews are prioritizing public safety buildings, 24/7 locations like shelters, government buildings * A lot of alleys will not be passable until next week * Residential trash/recycling/food waste collection is going to be very delayed due to conditions of alleys * DPW is working on ideas to get trash from alleys, including deploying leaf crews not on snow removal to assist * Tomorrow, we will have a better sense from meteorologists of the impacts of any potential weekend storm * Anticipate DCPS making a call about school tomorrow by 5 p.m. tonight Ongoing snow removal efforts: * 280 plows on DC streets with supervisors checking routes * 90 dump trucks picking up snow piles from corners and moving to RFK parking lots * 30 pieces of heavy equipment loading snow where snow is too high. Clive came out for just a couple of minutes as it gives him such joy. Every time we get a blast of snow, there’s more and more shops/sheds in the Peace Country collapsing because of the snow load. Today we took care of that stress, and at least it’s only -16°c today. 👌🏼 This side of the shop is the North side, so it doesn’t have as much snow cover as the south side does. The lift just makes it so much safer. There is already a young fella from the area that is going down a long road of recovery, as the building he was shovelling off, collapsed and he landed in the wreck. Snow safety, is something we haven’t had to have on our radar for quite a few years to say the least.

UPDATE: The fire is out, investigators are on scene. The fire started on the outside of a duplex, burned through the wood deck, and climbed up into the attic on one side of the structure. Then it traveled down a wood fence, burning the back side of another structure, through the yard, to a vehicle. A few minutes into the fire, firefighters heard two explosions from propane tanks which helped fuel the fire. Crews were able to contain the fire to one side of the duplex. UPDATE: The fire is out, investigators are on scene. The fire started on the outside of a duplex, burned through the wood deck, and climbed up into the attic on one side of the structure. Then it traveled down a wood fence, burning the back side of another structure, through the yard, to a vehicle. A few minutes into the fire, firefighters heard two explosions from propane tanks which helped fuel the fire. Crews were able to contain the fire to one side of the duplex. There is limited water damage on the other side. There were no injuries. Crews rescued a lizard, but a cat is still missing.
