This is not about appearance. It’s about giving robots real tactile sensing and pressure feedback. According to the company, the system includes tactile gloves, upper-body skin, and foot sensors. How do you give a humanoid the general motion capability? Not just single motions, but all motion? Introducing SONIC, our new work on supersizing motion tracking for natural humanoid control. We argue that motion tracking is the scalable foundation task for humanoids. So we "supersized" it: 9k+ GPU hours and 100M+ motion frames. It is an 88 cm, 12.5 kg humanoid with 21 active degrees of freedom that costs roughly $1,500. Its distinguishing idea is that the body and the controller are designed together through a three-stage data-driven pipeline: - anatomical constraints - kinematic criteria - closed-loop dynamic criteria Hence the morphology itself is optimized to preserve human motion quality when the robot executes. It demonstrates teleoperated locomotion, balance-oriented motion (bending, lunging, extreme balance) and highly dynamic motion including back-flips and expressive sequences. I’m sorry but every other form factor besides humanoids will be crushed 🦾🤖🦾 I keep hearing people starting specialized robotics companies, “like robots for laundry”. And the pitch is: “you don’t need a humanoid form factor to do laundry, it can be much simpler”. That’s true. But, humanoids can do everything and will become the default form factor and so will be mass manufactured and so will be extremely cheap compared to lower volume robots. Its so obvious, it will be humanoids doing laundry, not a specialized laundry robot 🤦‍♂️ The one main exception to that might be line work in a factory where you do just need the arms and you can mass manufacture them (a al Proception)

Humanoid robots are great, but I also want the moments where I’m the one doing the chores to be more fun. With Vision Pro I can upgrade my kitchen to feature a TV, my favorite apps, the recipe, a timer and more. It feels like a completely different experience baking or cooking like that, and suddenly I don’t mind doing the dishes anymore. This is the future, and I’m so ready for it when it comes.
