Linear CEO Karri Saarinen says some companies are using "friction forms" to help engineers break through bureaucracy and get new AI tools approved faster: "There are a lot of companies where employees ask, 'Can I use agents?' and they say, 'No, you can’t.' Steve Jobs on what separates the successful founders from unsuccessful ones Steve is asked what the factors of success and common pitfalls are for young entrepreneurs. He responds: “I get asked this a lot, and I have a pretty standard answer. A lot of people come to me and say, ‘I want to be an entrepreneur.’ And I go, ‘Oh, that’s great, what’s your idea?’ And they say they don’t have one yet. And I say I think you should go get a job as a busboy or something until you find something you’re really passionate about, because it’s a lot of work.” Steve continues: “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance. It is so hard. You pour so much of your life into this thing, and there are such rough moments in time that most people give up. I don’t blame them. It’s really tough, and it consumes your life. I mean, if you’ve got a family and you’re in the early days of a company, I can’t imagine how one could do it. I’m sure it’s been done, but it’s rough because it’s pretty much an 18-hour-a-day job, 7 days a week for a while. So unless you have a lot of passion about this, you’re not going to survive. You’re going to give it up.” He concludes: “You’ve got to have an idea or a problem or a wrong that you want to right that you’re passionate about. Nick Saban was asked a question after practice once. His response was 70 seconds of gold on what it takes to be successful in life. Here’s Saban on the Illusion of Choice: “These guys, they all think they have this illusion of choice. Like I can do whatever I want to do. “You have a younger generation now that doesn’t always get told no. They don’t get told this is exactly how you need to do it. So they have this illusion that they have all these choices. “But the fact of the matter is, if you want to be good you don’t really have a lot of choices. It takes what it takes. You have to do what you have to do to be successful. “You have to make the choices and decisions to have the discipline and the focus to the process of what you need to do to accomplish your goals. “All these guys that think they have a lot of choices are sadly mistaken. As we all have done with our own children, they learn these lessons of life as they get older. “Sometimes the best way to learn is from the mistakes you make, even though we all hate to see them have to make them, and we don’t condone it when they do.” – I’ve studied Saban for 12+ years, and the Illusion of Choice is one of the most powerful concepts I’ve come across. Some key takeaways: 1. Excellence has a price. We can complain about that, but it’s a fact of life. 2. Most people don’t want to pay that price. They just haven’t admitted it to themselves. 3. Saying you want to be excellent is easy. Becoming excellent is hard. 4. There may not be one way to become great, but there are very few. And they all have discipline and consistency in common. 5. I'm up late with the rest of you building AI agents with the new AI browser from Genspark. We can see where this is all going: a new kind of operating system -- one that is very different than the Microsoft centric way that I've been working for 20 years. There are several things that these new agentic browsers bring to you: 1. They let you change how you browse. With an old browser like Google Chrome, you go to your email, Facebook, or X. 2. With these new browsers, you tell it where to go and what to do for you. 3. It can even build software for you. At the end of this video, I have it building me a little YouTube uploading utility, which is very helpful. 4. They have a ton of "applications" built in. Think of it as a new kind of office suite. Docs. Spreadsheets. Slide decks. And much more. All built with AI, not bolted on the side like with Microsoft's Office. 5. They have AI models built "underneath" so you can work privately and cheaply. There’s a lot of new choices you have to make with browsers like this. I’ve been playing with a bunch of them. Some have better user interfaces than others. Some have different versions, slide components, or applications. The reason I like Genspark is because they ship so fast. I’ve been watching this company since its very beginnings, and every week they ship new things. Just yesterday, they shipped a new photo editing feature for my iPhone. I upload a photo and then I can just talk to it and edit it with my voice. It's really cool. I try to reward companies that ship at such a fast rate and that are shipping innovation that improves our lives. It's not that I'm going to stop using Google Chrome. My whole life has been there for, I don't know, almost 20 years now. This is a different way of working and it gives me a space to run my AI tasks that's different than Google Chrome. I run them side by side. One doing old stuff, one doing new stuff. I can keep using Google Chrome for my old stuff, like my email and my calendar. And I use GenSpark or one of the new AI browsers to do new AI-centric things. All sorts of new things that these new agentic browsers open up! Have you tried it, or one of the other new ones yet? Nawiwi: "Whether to renew the contract or not, we already had an official discussion about a month ago with both the parents coming to talk to me and the team. We talked and seemed to understand each other, and the artist and parents said they would give a response in 2-3 days, but more than a month has passed now. No matter how many times I ask, there is no answer, and it’s not clear. This is what we got, so we don’t know either. I have had staff follow up with the artist many times asking what the response is. What the plan is, what was agreed on. They were supposed to give a summary back because we already gave the solution and they wanted to propose something. We wanted to listen but they just disappeared. From three days to more than a month now, no matter how many times I ask, no response. Probably not coming, probably busy lately. I see them just playing fitness and liking all the fans’ posts first. So, fan clubs when you say you want that person to have work, you have to see if they actually want to do it, like it, or just have to endure it. You have to see who they really are, uh... yeah. You have to see the reality too... We are ready to support and open opportunities in every case. Even if you say how many million per year you want, write it down and we will arrange it for you. If you don’t trust us, go trust someone else, and it will turn out like this. But we are not saying it’s not everyone’s personal right. Is Traditional Software Engineering Dead? “Does this mean that traditional software engineering is dead? Absolutely not. Software engineers—even the ones who are not necessarily tuning or training AI models—these are now among the most leveraged people on earth. Sure, the guys who are training and tuning models are even more leveraged because they’re building the tool set that software engineers are using. But software engineers still have two massive advantages on you. First, they think in code, so they actually know what’s going on underneath. And all abstractions are leaky. So when you have a computer programming for you—when you have Claude Code or equivalent programming for you—it’s going to make mistakes. It’s going to have bugs. It’s going to have suboptimal architecture. So it’s not going to be quite right. And someone who understands what’s going on underneath will be able to plug the leaks as they occur. So if you want to build a well-architected application, if you want to be able to even specify a well-architected application, if you want to be able to make it run at high performance, if you want it to do its best, if you want to catch the bugs early, then you’re going to want to have a software engineering background. The traditional software engineer is going to be able to use these tools much better. And there are still many kinds of problems in software engineering that are out of scope for these AI programs today. The easiest way to think about those is problems that are outside of their data distribution. For example, if they need to do a binary sort or reverse a linked list, they’ve seen countless examples of that, so they’re extremely good at it. But when you start getting out of their domain—where you have to write very high-performance code, when you’re running on architectures that are novel or brand new, when you’re actually creating new things or solving new problems, then you still need to get in there and hand code it. At least until either there are so many of those examples that new models can be trained on them, or until these models can sufficiently reason at even higher levels of abstraction and crack it on their own… And remember: there is no demand for average. The average app—nobody wants it, at least as long as it’s not filling some niche that is filled by a superior app. The app that is better will win essentially a hundred percent of the market. Maybe there’s some small percentage that will bleed off to the second-best app because it does some little niche feature better than the main app, or it’s cheaper, or something of the sort. But generally speaking, people only want the best of anything. So the bad news is there’s no point in being number two or number three—like in the famous Glengarry Glen Ross scene where Alec Baldwin says, “First place gets a Cadillac Eldorado, second place gets a set of steak knives, and third place you’re fired.” That’s absolutely true in these winner-take-all markets. That’s the bad news: You have to be the best at something if you want to win. However, the set of things you can be best at is infinite. You can always find some niche that is perfect for you, and you can be the best at that thing. This goes back to an old tweet of mine where I said, “Become the best in the world at what you do. Keep redefining what you do until this is true.” And I think that still applies in this age of AI.”
