Surpassed in what sense. A GTK app and a Qt app in the same session still disagree about file dialogs, fonts and scrollbar behaviour. Mixed-DPI monitors are toolkit-dependent. Screen readers are years behind. One vendor enforcing one design language is the part Linux gave up.

Until you want to install/compile something with billion of incompatible dependencies, or use some regular hardware that is not supported, or just tons of other shit. Windows is crap, but Linux is not usable for desktop unless you really know exactly what limited list of software and hardware you are going to use.

As cool at this looks, Gnome is better for productivity. Windows people will prefer "using" KDE.

Thats not even remotely good. Its very inconsistent. Buttons are there rounded and here cornered. There are shadows, but only here. Why would I have a settings loading animation? No clue how anyone could like it (and get productive work done)

Playability is still a huge problem, until the day every windows game runs flawlessly on linux I will never switch. I rather be able to play my full library rather than maybe half if im lucky.

I do lowkey miss bb4win and litestep. That said, they at best just made Windows have a more tolerable ui that was more like a Linux wm.

Hyprland and Quickshell look amazing. Kinda sad don't see more AGS shells anymore.

Modern KDE and GNOME look cleaner and handle fractional scaling way better than Windows 11's legacy Control Panel mix. The real difference is consistency: Linux desktop environments commit to their design system instead of stacking four eras of UI together.

Yea, only if you spend a ton of time ricing, and then tweaking everything on updates. and god forbid you package it all up and send a distro like this out the box, youll run into omarchy-hate "why use someone elses dotfiles... waaah". Its so exhausting
