Linux Mint Says Wayland Worse Experience than X11 "We worked really hard on Wayland"... "and the experience is almost on par with X11."

At least for me on my hardware, the X11 experience is indeed better. I am also a grumpy old man that has used X11 since -92, so I don't like change.

I agree it is almost on par with X11. But X11 still does things Wayland doesn't. And probably never will, because it wasn't designed for it. If your only tool is a hammer every problem is a nail.

Tens of thousands of open source developers have spent the past 17 years working on Wayland, its compositors, the DEs, the libraries, the programs using the libraries, the scripts calling the programs.... Imagine if all this work went instead to useful features and bug fixes. 🙄

Used Wayland desktop environments the last couple of distros I've tried out. Been a gnome user a long time and trying out Cosmic on PopOS and I want to like them but stuff is a little flakey. Cut buffers are wonky, won't wake up from sleep, won't sleep if I close the lid, etc.

Wayland has worked without issue for me. I can't say the same about X11.

X11 is just too deeply entrenched and reliable to completely kill off yet.

Please, could you just stop posting this stuff. Wayland was not perfect for a long time. But at leas last 2 years it works better than X11 (on KDE). BTW lost all faith in the X11 after XLibre drama with commits reverting. X11 must die but what will replace it?

Tried giving Wayland a go on mint. Picture in Picture video crashes my browser, no keyboard shortcuts. Its not ready yet. Not all change is bad. Pipewire fixed the worst of Pulseaudio for example.

These community notes are comical. Almost on par == Not as good. Not as good == Worse. People need to learn how to English.

No HiRes 4k scaling in X11 means X11 is unusable for me 😕 Mint as well.

All I know is that on my KDE system, I had problems with screen flicker in full screen games that went away when I switched from Wayland to X11.

This is great news. I am looking forward to trying out Mint on Wayland with all these improvements. I't would just be nice if it was released before next Christmas.

I would use X11 if I were only using one monitor. Wayland just handles it better.

There really, really is a hint in this people. If they couldn't get it there right...what possesses anyone else to think that it's ultimately all that great. Speed isn't everything if it's broken. Security isn't everything if it doesn't fucking work right.

This has to be ragebait lol

WTF are you even talking about? Have exactly zero Wayland issues in tumbleweed

Why hasn't Square Fluggen-Flagon sponsored you? I'm outraged.

Idk man. I switched to Wayland a few years ago just for the lols and it really works better than x11 for me. I have multiple monitors with different refresh rates and x11 could never get it right. Hyperland, kde, gnome all work flawlessly for me with Wayland

Linux is about software freedom and choice, and I personally choose X11. I really like the original vision behind it, and I don't care that the people who came up with that vision did so a few decades ago.

Are you fucking stupid or something? Can you read? Read the post again. Show us on the doll where Wayland "worse than X11"

don't you get tired

Value for value.

you know that x11 is still there. Wayland has its pros

Well, technically, the wayland is not so bad. The GNOME experience is not so bad. But the overall software achitecture is horrible. However, the X11 is also a problem, and we basically just need more work on the display server.

I want tiling windows on my Mint :-/

Wayland on fedora is phenomenal, except for a few minor things

And that's why I'm sticking with X11 on Mint

We gotchu

Hilarious. Makes me just dig my heels into X11.

wayland sucks
