‼️ "People from the East are flocking to Belarus": Lukashenka threatens the EU with a new hybrid war Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenka, speaking today in a church for Orthodox Christmas, once again turned to threats against EU countries. This time, he began to threaten the EU countries bordering Belarus with a new proxy war using migrants as weapons. Lukashenka claimed that "people from the East are starting to flock to Belarus." He complained about their "incompetence" and "lack of professional skills," adding that "uncontrolled migration is a disaster" for Belarus. Belarusian dictator literally admitted that Belarus is the main transit route for migrants heading to Western Europe: "There is a huge transit through us to the West, where [migrants] are trying to get to," accusing the EU of blaming it for the flow of refugees. "We will not protect anyone from migrants. Especially those who impose economic sanctions on us. Why should we protect them?" said Lukashenka. Belarusian regime is once again using migrants as a weapon against Europe, showing complete disregard for human lives. This hybrid war started in 2021 when the regime orchestrated a migration crisis on Poland's border. Thousands of refugees from Africa and the Middle East attempted to cross into Poland, often with the help of Belarusian security forces, who facilitated fence-breaking and clashes with Polish border guards. Lukashenka's bloody games cost many migrants their lives. Hundreds froze to death or starved in the forests, while thousands were injured trying to climb over border fences. According to Polish authorities, around 15,000 migrants were present in Belarus in November 2021, with 2,000 to 4,000 stranded directly at the border. Last year, the Polish Sejm significantly expanded the powers of border guards, military and police officers in the fight against illegal migration. 🇱🇹Lithuania is strengthening its border security with Belarus by deploying additional military units This decision comes in response to the rising number of illegal migrants attempting to cross into Lithuania from Belarus. Rustamas Liubajevas, head of Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service (VSAT), announced that an agreement has been reached with the country’s Armed Forces to station extra troops in the Varėna area starting Thursday. “I cannot disclose the exact number of soldiers, as this information is classified, but the army will support us in securing several sections of the border,” Liubajevas said on TV3 News.

This week brought us closer to finalizing the 19th sanctions package – we expect its approval soon. We will quickly synchronize the package in Ukraine. Russia’s energy resources are being restricted. The infrastructure of the “shadow fleet” will face new pressure. Cryptocurrency schemes used by Russia to bypass sanctions will also be countered by Europe. I am grateful that many of Ukraine’s proposals have been taken into account in the EU sanctions package. We now expect strong sanctions steps from the United States as well – Europe is doing its part. Everyone can now see Russian interference – against Poland, and yesterday against Estonia. These are not accidental incidents. Russia will continue trying to spread its aggression, destabilization, and interference. This is their system. This must be countered, also systemically, and together. I thank everyone who is helping.

I met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Kęstutis Budrys. This is his fifth visit to Ukraine in this role. I thank all the people of Lithuania for supporting Ukraine, as they have stood by Ukraine since the first days of Russian aggression. We discussed regional security and the threats Russia and Belarus pose, especially following the recent drone incursion on Poland; strengthening sanctions policy; joint defense production; participation in the SAFE instrument and PURL initiative; and assistance with reconstruction, demining, education, and rehabilitation of the wounded. Lithuania has opened an office in Ukraine to coordinate these projects – and that is important. Thank you. Support for Ukraine on its path to the EU, including the opening of the first negotiating cluster, was another key topic. We are also preparing for the UN General Assembly – our collective voice must be strong.
